How do I know if my A2 has a DMF?

Hi. I recently bought a 2002 1.4 diesel A2. Unfortunately it has developed a shudder when under load. Especially in lower gears. Clutch does not appear to be slipping but shuddering and making clunk noises. Otherwise car runs fine and will coast at 70mph as long as car isn't put under load. My loacal mechanic stated he thought symptons would be from DMF. I did say that only some A2 s have a DMF. How can I know beforhand if it does or does not have a DMF? I cant see anwhere in any paperwork I have if it is 75hp or 90hp.

If it's got rear discs it's the 90hp. The two 75hp diesels had rear drums.

Edit: but @A2Steve's answer is the correct one, I wasn't looking at all the facts :)

Most likely a blocked fuel filter causing fuel starvation under higher loads and therefore cutting a cylinder of fuel
Or wiring loom to injector breaking down
A scan using vcds will be very helpful

Thank you for the quick replies. My A2 is Jan 2002 and has drum brakes to the rear ..so guess that settles the answer. The local mechanic I usually go to was going to order a new DMF and clutch. It does though feel like some sort of problen to that area with at times what seems to be quite a thunk on gear changes. If Cruising at speed and then go up an incline car will shudder and have to put it in a lower gear ( whereas before it would cruise the incline) lower gears the shudder and clunking is worse.

Its very hard to diagnose from the description, but i'd consider a different mechanic if he was going to order a part for a car that doesn't even exist prior to a diagnosis (and I don't mean a scan).

As Paul @depronman has said change the fuel filter, just make sure you get the correct one for your car, early metal canister later plastic housing. If the plastic type get a replacement "drain screw for life " from Paul while you are at it. Secondly if that does not cure it replace the injector loom.

Just a though though. If it is simply fuel starvation any guess as to the clunking , thunkinging and weid noise on gearchange. No untoward noise from gearbox. Does serm to be clutch?

You need advice from a mechanic who is reasonably familiar with the A2. The best route is to go to an established independent VAG specialist.
If no VAG specialist option exists, then make sure that whoever you use has a fully licensed copy of VCDS and knows how to use it..

Could be clunking due to worn mounts made worse by the "misfire". Sort the "misfire" first then check the mounts especially the pendulum mount. Flush brakes and bleed clutch as probably not been done in a looonnngg time.

dog bone mount is the likely cause of the noise but the misfire will be the real cause of the noise (as it will make the engine jerk a lot and therefore push the load onto the dog bone mount
The one for the polo is a far cheaper solution as its about a 1/5 of the price of the A2 one and is interchangeable

Hey! I've got the plastic canister with a busted drain plug, where can one get these "drain screw for life" replacements? Just DM paul or?

Just to folow up, my problem was in fact the dog bone mount. One of the rubber sections on the larger circle was completely missing. My mechanic was finally free to look at the car and spotted the problem almost straight away. The missing rubber is now replaced with a peice of wood! Not Ideal and leaves the car shuddering on start up but once moving drives great again. No missfires at all to the engine, so that must have been a symptom of the missing rubber bush presenting similar to a missfire. Second hand dogbone ordered and hopefully all will be well again.

You’re likely to have a similar issue with a second hand unit. Better to use a polo 9n one that’s brand new for about £35
