Ignition off lights?

We just purchased a very nice yellow 1.4 TDI and are really pleased with that. The car comes originally from Germany. Living in Sweden where headlights on is compulsory also during the day, I wonder if anybody have a description for how to modify the lights to go on and off with the ignition.

That'll be a VAGCOM coding jobbie me thinks, is there a local a2oc member near to you that can assist otherwise its off to the stealer or a VAGCOM equiped specialist I'm afraid

There is a retrofit kit available to add daytime running lights to the A2, which I have, but have not yet got round to fitting.

There are some wiring errors in the installation manual, which is mainly aimed at the Golf 4 and Polo market, so when I get round to doing this, I'll give feedback to the forums.

The part number, for reference, is 1J0 998 055A and the price (in the UK) is £35.00

The A2 is one of the VAG cars where activation of DRLs is NOT possible by a software tweek! Typical.

Cheers,

Mike

Will they run your LEDs Mike?

Reckon if I had LEDs I'd make sure they were on all the time!

The kit should cope with the LEDs fine - all the driving circuitry is in the headlamp itself, just requiring a 12 volt feed. I will get around to fitting the kit soon.

how long before my A2 can find Mike's house on its own ?

Hi Mike, I would be interested in this
although might be another trip to see tank :D and request your skills if you add this to your long list of available mods :D

Wiring diagram?

Mike,
would you be in possesion of an A2 wiring diagram where the difference between a car ment for Germany and one for the Swedish market can be seen? It can't be that big difference and not that hard to do the change once you know how its wired.

The difference is that the standard daytime running lights means sidelights (citylights) and dipped beams on together.

What I am attempting to do is have just the sidelights on with the ignition.

The wiring diagram is in the workshop manual - you just have to trace back through the unconnected 'TRL' pin to see what the effect is.

Cheers,

Mike

mats, it depends if you need rear lights on as well.
I have the TFL pin on the headlight switch connected directly to a pair of hella DRLs. They've been running now for... five years? no problems.

The rear lights are more difficult. They are done using 2 1N4001 diodes, otherwise there's no way to retain parking lights.

Yes, I need dipped beams and rear lights on.
In Sweden its the other way around compared to how my A2 is working now: Normally the light switch is in the dipped beam "on" position and when you switch the ignition on or off, the light goes on or off. In normal life you never touch it. If you want parking lights (light with ignition off), you have to put the light switch in "parking light on" position. Then the small lights are on even after ignition is off.

The workshop manual, is that an original from Audi or an aftermarket one?

i will look into the specific pins and let you know. They are marked on the back of the switch.

To install:
Turn the switch to off. now press in and turn 5 -10 degrees to the right, then pull. DON'T FORCE IT!

There are two connectors on the back, release them and then you can read the letters. TFL is one pin, with a little work, you can get a 2.8mm spade through. then link TFL with 57R and 57L via diodes (otherwise, parklight always leaves both on). You will also always have the instrument cluster lights on with this, I haven't tried yet to turn them off.

Run the cable from the TFL pin through the bulkhead (pick your route, there are several, i've used one behind the footrest, you can also use the real one, but for that you may need to remove the windscreen wiper (!)) and then split it for the TFLs if you're going to do that. I would STRONGLY recommend doing just that. Our 307 eats bulbs at the rate of one set per year. If they're 150Kr / set, then the 600Kr for a pair of TFLs is paid for in four years.

to recap: TFL needs splitting at the pin, one to to go through to the TFLs, the other needs to be run through two diodes for the sidelights.
in front of the bonnet, you'll need to split your TFL again for each light. Ground is easy to find. that's it. A long afternoon and you should be done.

Sounds like a simple 1 wire modification will suit you fine then. The workshop manuals are the original Audi ones, covering most models from the 1980s to 2005, including all versions of the A2.

PM me for details.

Thanks Bret,
what is "TFL"?

Would the neatest way of doing this be to buy a light switch for the Swedish (and maybe some other) market? It seems to me that there could be different switches for different markets.

Even though the law says dipped beams on during the day, it doesn't mean they should go on automatically. Why don't you just turn the lights on manually? I'm quite pleased to have the option of turning the lights off when I don't need them.

i don't know if there are different ones, all the info I have is for the DE market (as that's also where I imported my car from).

I would suspect the Swedish equivalent to our MOT roadworthy test will fail the car if they don't come on automatically...
