How about the engine and gear box from a FWD Mk1 TT? Mine's a run out version with 190 bhp. Only 5 gears, but a ready made front end. The track width of both are close too, the TT is about 90mm wider, so would suit the obligatory wide arches,and improve stability.

The gearbox ratio would be to low and drive shafts are to long .

Better to you a fabia gearbox that bolts up and the same driveshafts are the right size too.
