Looked at another A2 ... confused

Went to look at an A2 today. 2002 TDi SE, silver with full beige leather interior, double din dash, climate, cruise, in short well specced. Genuine private sale too, not the usual garage rubbish. Just the sort of thing I've been looking for, albeit not entirely perfect.

Two things put me off, for the moment at least. Firstly I am not a fan of leather seats, and I seemed to sit "on" it rather than "in" it. Made for a nice interior though, were it not for the horrible brown steering wheel.

I confess I was swithering about making an offer, till I checked the door hinges and noticed cracks inthe door skins on both doors. I decided this was a reason not to buy the car.

My question is this ... am I likely to find these door cracks on every car I look at, and am I over-reacting? Just how serious is this doors issue?

Thanks

Hi John,

This is a known problem and affects both older and newer A2's. Check out the thread below...

A repair is available in the form of a new door and hinge; featuring a different design to the original. Mike, (Skipton01), has started the ball rolling with a letter to Audi suggesting that they address this issue on all affected cars regardless of age and warranty status and we are currently awaiting a response.

Some owners have been lucky and the fault has been acknowledged and rectified using the above method, but others have not been so lucky; hence the letter.

I would not let this put you off buying a car that is otherwise perfect; in fact if you are set on an A2 and buy one which exhibits no signs now, there is nothing to say that they won't appear in the future.

This issue aside - the car is fundamentally sound and makes for a great purchase.

The repair-solution without a new door comes on March. It is 20€ but calculated to about one hour of work for each side plus painting the new hinges.

Yes, I also think you find it on nearto every A2, so no point to worry. Cause it is pretty normal;)

John,

I quite like the retro look myself and 'brown is the new black after all'... ;)

Good luck with your search - I am sure you will soon find one that suits your needs and ticks the cosmetic box too.
