Looking at 2 X A2's

A while ago i looked at buying a A2 but it never happened.

There are two close by to me which im thinking of buying and just wanted your opinion.

First one is a "02" 1.4 its been hit on the front (not recorded) so there is no bumper or headlights. Its got a bent wishbone and track rod end but apart from that doesn't look like its got any structural damage. Its been sat around for a while so the interior isn't great (it is a 5 seat model tho) obviously no MOT or history (120k) looks a bit rough but i think it will clean up ok. What kind of money is it worth? is £300 to much?

Second one is "Y" reg 179k 1.4 looks in nice condition (body wise) but has got a engine fault, panoramic roof and drivers window dont work. Its got MOT until September 2016. How much is that one worth?

Any advise would be welcome.

Virtually any complete A2 is worth £300 in parts alone.

As for the second one I am sure you will get lots of varying price guesses, but £600 may well be the lower end and no more than £1,000 unless it is a particularly special one.
By the way, a sunroof (OSS) that is not working is better than no sunroof at all, in my view. You get lots of light in and I think it looks good even closed.

i thought the £300 car was worth buying. Do people value a 5 seater is worth more? the seller said its got the "good" engine code????

I personally prefer the 4 seater. The rea bench on the 5 seater is VERY heavy and difficult to get out (certainly by yourself) and you can't split the 5 seater.

Any engine code is a bad one if it has problems, the difference between the 1.4 engines is not that significant.

The Y reg apparently starts and runs but looses power and stalls. Any ideas?
Not easy to diagnose that one.

Unless it does it within a second or two and the "key shaped" symbol lights up. That would be the immobiliser kicking in.

If it is not this, then it would need to be scanned for errors to find the cause.

I think you can drive it for a short distance before starts stalling!!! Im viewing that one tomo evening so i'll take my code scanner.

Well those 2 didnt happen but another has turned up.

This one is a 03 1.6 FSI Sport 106k
I have yet to see the car but have been told its got a possible head gasket gone. Is this game over for the engine? i'm a mechanic so can do the work myself but its gunna require specialist work on the head which might make it not worth repairing.

I am not sure that a FSI with a hed gasket problem would present any more problems than any other car with the same.

It is all down to luck, it might be a thermostat or leak and so be an easy fix.
If it is a head gasket failure and not a crack, then a quick skim may be all that is needed.
If it is a cracked head, then a secondhand one would sort it.

So to me, once the actual cause has been diagnosed it should not be a disaster. It all depends on the asking price.

If this is the car that has recently popped up on eBay then it looks to have a lot of potential.

It's got a nice set of wheels,is in the best colour has Oss and is a sport model so has a lot going for it. That being said I wouldn't want to pay much more than £4-500 because of the work that needs doing.

Remind me what oss is:eek: that was the kind of price i was thinking, surely i can break it to get my money back if the engine is kuput!!

Open sky sunroof aka a full glass sunroof. Even if the engine is knackered I'm sure you could find a second hand one for less than £250 if you avoid the eBay rip-off breakers.

If the head has bent, you'll you're in quite deep for a repair. A compression test is needed. But if the head is bent, the headgasket is probably also gone. So you would need to replace the head gasket and then do a compression test. If you find that the head is bent, you have replaced the head gasket without actually getting anywhere, unless you want to source a new head to fit.

would a 1.6 FSI from a A3 fit??? or Golf?

No. The FSI in the A2 is unique to the A2.

Are you a competent home mechanic, or know people who would give you very good labour rates? I'm not sure buying a car with a known problem is the most cost effective way of doing things. There are plenty of A2s about for not too much more without possible HG failure or crash damage, parts can be pricey for these sometimes.

I am a mechanic so can do the majority of the work myself. My concern was as you have said, the parts aren't interchangable with other VAG group cars. Like ive said, if it does end up being beyond repair i could break it and get my money back.

I would look for the best spec in that case. So something with a double din dash, leather, bose, sport spec, or a votex bodykit. They're all desirable items and would sell quickly if you had to break the car due to mechanical issues. FSI's tend to be higher spec
