Looking for a new VAG

A visit to a relevant forum will throw up tales of woe with that engine, not one if VW groups better offerings.

Thanks Adrian that's most helpful! I'm a member on Briskoda so will have a read as you recommend.

My wifes 1.6Tdi Golf had its EGR replaced under warranty after around two years from new. It is now 7yrs old and "touch wood" there have been no other faults with the engine. Whoops - ive gone and said it now. :)

I had a A1 1.6tdi and the DPF used to become blocked every few months. A friend has a Leon 1.6tdi and had to have a new EGR valve. £400...

The 1.4TDI 75bhp is widely regarded as being the most reliable of all the A2 engines, but they take a long time to warm up and are geared for longer, extra-urban journeys.

Tom

That's useful to know, I was also wondering which engine was the one to go for.

Not wishing to disagree with Tom, who I greatly respect.
But the tdi has a preheater that helps warm the engine more quickly in cold weather. So i have never noticed any impact of that. My wife has had an A2 tdi for 15 years and she just does the school run and we have not experienced any issue due to the slower warm up.
Also i find the gearing perfectly acceptable and works perfectly for us.
The strong torque of the TDI means you have a wider range of revs at which to change.

Ok so i am a huge fan of the tdi (7 in our immediate family) but tgecreason for that bias is down to the amazing reliability and stength of the tdi. Across the 7 tdis and over the last 15 years we have had no breakdownd and no engine conponent failures.

So Tom is correct technically, i would not argue his points. But in my experience those technical issues have been invisible.

This forum has a great atmosphere and we can disagree without anything being taken personally, as in this case.

No disrespect to any petrol A2 owners it is just ygat with me it is TDI every time.
by the way i have bought several petrol A2s over the years and so i have been able to do a decent comparison.

My personal preference always goes towards Tdi 75 every time, 100k if they have been well maintained is really nothing for the engine, I've taken them in px with well over 200k and been amazed how little they have worn and how well they still drive. I've had a few bad experiences with the Petrol 1.6 FSI engines, however the 1.4 Petrol is a great little engine, good for short journeys but dearer to run, tax and maintain than a diesel although cheaper to purchase in the first place. From a selling perspective I only buy and retail as well as run my own tdi 75 and I'm finding nice examples are more and more sought after. Hope this helps, please remember to always Hpi check it before buying privately, saves tears later on. Nick

Ps. Just to add I don't have any available for sale as just sold the last two in stock and I have to say I'm not touting for business, only trying to be helpful. I enjoy and drive the A2 myself and am always happy to help where I can, should a member ever directly purchase a car from me posting then I'd be only too happy to contribute £50 towards the A2OC to show my appreciation for all the invaluable information that this club has to offer, thanks to all who have contributed in helping fellow A2 owners. Nick (going back in the cupboard now)

I have asked Nick several times in the past why he does not post more about the great A2s he often has for sale and he indicated that he did not want to appear to be posting just to sell A2s. I think this is a measure of his honesty.

He has had plenty of top spec A2s for sale over the years and I personally would like to see details of any he has available as and when (subject to the marketpace rules of course).

I have always found Nick to be open and honest (I am not on commission :D).

It would be wrong for the club to announce any preferences towards (or against) any business, this is purely my personal view.

Thanks for contributing Nick, it is most welcome, as far as I am concerned.

The Tdi doesn't take as long to warm up as might appear by monitoring the temperature gauge. If you have ever monitored engine temperature with VCDS, you'll have noticed the difference!
