Here's what telegraph had to say about competition:

Unlike some of the competition, the Meriva feels like a car in its own right, not like a Corsa in a tent. It's cooler than the dismal Ford Fusion, but not as cool as an Audi A2. The high driving position provides good all-round visibility, which is only slightly obscured by the windscreen pillars - unlike the Audi's, which block out entire corners. It's the Meriva's eggy shape that prevents you being able to see the nose or the rear corners as you crunch the bollards in Tesco's car park.

In the Dutch magazine autoweek was a big test of the Opel *(Vauxhall) Meriva together with a Honda Jazz Ford Fusion and a Hyundai Matrix my wife Annette was asked as a driver of a competing car to give her opinion.
I have tried to translate it but please forgive me the mistakes as English is still a foreign language for me

Secretary board of directors her own car Audi A2 1,4

The size of the Opel Meriva is competing with my Audi A2 but if you put the cars next to each other ill find the Opel very common *(normal). He misses the looks and the glamour the A2 gives.
Looking at the practical part and the comfort + the view when you look around you the Meriva was quite positive.
A big plus is also that there can be a towing knob under the car which cannot be done at my Audi.
That would be the only reason to change towards the Meriva.
If I would change the only one with a fair chance would be the 1,8 16V Cosmo complete with satellite navigation.
That would be ideal and would save us a lot of arguing going on holiday.
The car has a lot of room for such a small car and I am quite charmed by the way the backseat can be used especially the fact that you can let the whole backseat disappear in to the back floor .
The 1,6 16V is in my opinion very noisy compared to 1,8 16V over the driving I can be very short you can easily drive the Meriva with a little higher speed through a curb.
But if you like a Meriva with a bit more accessories on it the car becomes extremely expensive.
From the competing cars I have taken the Hyundai Matrix for a drive I did not like it much I had to get use to the clutch and my legs were not in the right position as I touched the dashboard continuously

Actually saw a Meriva in the flesh today. Not bad lookers. A very much like the Zafira from the rear, and a lot bigger than what I thought. Slightly bigger than a Scenic possibly. Still looked good.
