Mixture

I am having similar issues with out of band mixtures (Fault codes 16804, 17560, 17912 thread in Diagnostics forum) with my 1.6FSi petrol engine.

There seem to be many posters with similar issues.
The problem is that the management system makes a decision to set mixture based on a number of sensors MAF, MAP Oxygen, NOX, temperatures etc.
The system selects a short term mixture setting based on immediate dirving style/conditions and selects a long term setting based on an average of conditions.
The management system then acts on these settings by adjusting ignition timing, pulse width of injectors, EGR, airflow etc.

Because all these are linked the issues could be with any point (including the infamous air leak). Also, although total sensor failures may be detected, drifting or failing sensors may cause the mixture to be adjusted further out until the light comes on over time (long term trim settings) after 1-2 hours driving.

Resetting the fault light also clears the 'learned settings' so the light goes out. Over 1-2 hours driving the engine re-learns the settings / compensations and the engine light comes back on. Resetting codes and clearing the engine ligh does not fix the underlying issue, it just masks it.

None of these statements help solve the issue, but does explain why the independants (and mainy dealers) randomly change components as they dont have a stock of parts to swap out until they fix it, also its only 'slightly out' so you have to do some driving for the issue to manifest its self....

Top three quoted suspects;
1) Air leak - cheap to fix - rearely identified (some on this website)
2) MAF - £80-£100 reconditioned unit from Audi
3) Lambda - I was quoted £150 from Audi - much cheaper units availble but quality / reliability not as good?

Unfortunately people rarely go back into forums to detail what actually fixed the issue so many posts just end with no resolution - please post your fixes when you get them...

Regards and Good Luck ;)

I've been around the loop with one so called Audi specilist on the air leak a number of times but nothing was ever found.

The same garage also replaced the front Lamba sensor, which had no effect on the problem.

The EGR valve has been cleaned, but again no effect.

In the end I grew tired of taking it back to the garage, and being relieved of £60-100 , every couple of weeks so just bought a cheap scanner to clear the fault code, as it seemed that was all the garage ended up doing.

They seemed pretty convinced the problem was in the inlet side as they'ed monitored the exhaust gasses.

At no point did the garage suggest the MAP sensor. I might try suggesting that the next time to a different garage I'm now using when it goes in for its service.

This is over the top

This Mixture problem is turning out to be a major issue with the petrol A2. We should get organized, as the local Audi dealers and service people obviously can´t locate the real problem. We can´t all go around changing MAP and Oxygen -sensors, looking for leaks, scratching our heads for no reason.

Anybody feel free to write a letter to the CEO of petrol A2´s and demand a proper solution!:D

It´s driving me nuts...

Cheers,

I don't think the problem is restricted to just the A2 or the 1.4 petrol engine, I've seen similar threads on other Seat, Skoda and VW forums whilst looking for a solution.

The main issue I see is that the fault code could be a result of several different faults and I can't see how Audi will respond with a fix all solution (other than a software update to disable the feature).

With my car this has been an on-going issue for over 10 months and at no point has the fault appeared to effect the performance of the car.
I've now got used to it and just consider it as one of the annoyances of the car (along with the slight oil usage and hard ride), and with the code reader at least I'm not shelling out to get it cleared :)

After my experiences, I have to say that I couldn't recomend an Audi to anyone else, which is a shame. I really like the car and I'm sticking with it for now - mainly because the only other alternatives I might consider are also VAG group.
