Most irritating thing on your A2? Inside or out?

Hehe, I too would also like to see a jog-dial for changing the temp in the car, far more sense that the buttons with have the longest delay in increments u have to bash the buttons real quick to get your temp (eg if going from high to low), as for the gearbox the A2's gearbox is one of the slickest there is it throws into gear almost like the MR2's granted with those u blow them into gear hehe, if your box is stiff of bucks then its probably a faulty one but audi will fob it off as being within their scale of 1-10 acceptance opperating, my petrol has the most nasty gearbox there is, it bucks on 4th gear and 1st although 1st is expected as it does not auto mesh/sync with the other gears as its independent same with reverse, audi say its fine nothing wrong with it, and there was me thinknig it was me who was to be satisfied and not the engineer testing the car lol oh well, at least i got my tdi to have fun in and the gearbox in that is like butter.

I think one of the things you can change when you go into the car's setup is the temp increments of the climatronic... I think I saw it under the things you did not know about your A2... ?

Personally I always though climatronic as being a useless luxury. But having it in the Golf convinced me. I love the set and forget nature of it on Auto. On a normal system you always get hot after a while and have to turn the heat down. With climatronic you st the temp and the car turns it down for you! Billiant. And if you want it somewhere else, you just press the button of where you want the heat to go and it is there! Apart from to my feet... I can never get enough heat to my feet if they are freezing - it is as if there are no outlets by my feet? Are there? But 99% of the time Auto is perfect.

As to gearchange: I remember some of the first magazine tests when the A2 came out stating that the gearchange was one of the best around in ANY car... the petrol I had for a test drive had a sublime gearchange... better than the Golf V5's even. But mine, though good, has never been as good as the petrol one I test drove... so inconsistent gearboxes are a characteristic then...

Very Slight (almost picky) annoyances (in no particular order)
  • Windscreen washers are less than adequate (no coverage, always aim too low, etc.)
  • Have to release the clutch a little whilst pushing the gear lever to engage reverse, approx 1/3rd of the time.
  • You can't tell when the ECC has switched off in winter. In the A4 the little snowflake icon disappears. If the temp. varies from when you started (i.e. climbed above 5 degrees C) you can always, turn off the engine and restart in the A4 and you can see if the cooling is back on, I miss this snowflake on the display
  • Radio reception is awful, AM is a dead loss
  • A-pillars mean roundabouts are a nightmare
  • Rattles

These are all very minor though, overall I love the ride, fun car to drive, speedbumps I can live with!

Yip - now that mention it: part of the washer jet problem is that they aim too low...

ECC? If you have DIS as an option you do get the snowflake symbol... does that mean something switches on or off below or above 5 degrees? I'm not aware of anything electronic changing in these conditions? Internally or in the ESP/ABS etc side of things. Explain...

Below 5 (or maybe 10) degrees outside the cooler of the cc system switches off to prevent damage from ice. And on the diesel engines, the webasto heater switches automatically on below 5 degrees outside.

The indicator on DIS is just a warning that there could be ice on the road. On the bigger Audi's there's a small symbol in the CC panel that indicates that the cooler is functioning, the A2 hasn't got that.

BTW, the washer jets can be easily adjusted.

1. Climate control has a mind of it's own when deciding what fan speed it thinks I would like

2. Driving with the driver window open (RHD) - the buffeting is incredible, and you have to shut the window above 20 MPH.

If you have the open sky system, I have found the solution to the wind buffeting is to open the roof just an inch or so so that it at a tilt and the wind buffeting will go away.

Yep, it's that symbol that I miss.

BTW, easily adjusted, before I mangle mine with a screwdriver, any tips on how to do this successfully?

No screwdriver, it can be adjusted with your fingers. Just grab it and move it upwards a little bit.

The most irritating thing for me is the fact that you can lock the keys in the car via the boot. One of the family did it 200 miles from home, luckily the spare set was in my wifes handbag. Well not exactly lucky, I almost expected it! The keys are now always clipped on my belt, but I think that in an unguarded moment we could get caught again.

I nearly did it once myself! Now I rarely use the boot opening feature from the fob for this exact reason. If you open the entire car as per normal and only use the boot, you can't lock them inside the boot at all as the doors are open too!!!

The most annoying thing is the stupid pump - I use it a lot and it takes forever to get all the wires back inside. Anyone else suffer from this problem? Any tips?

(sorrie about my Englisch) I'm obove 2 meters, my problem is when i step oyside off my car i always press with my left leg the button for the fuel.
I think maybe some people can sugur in my tank?
Dose some have a solution for me? Maybe change this buttun somewher on the dash?

yes

As I said before, the most annoying thing for me is the heater controls. Operating the switches can be dangerous. Turning the temp up or down takes ages and the fan operates itself. I can be driving along and suddenly get subjected to a blast of air- it's crap!! The controls look good though!
Yes the air pump is hopeless to refit, but it begs the question, why Noonoo, if you'll forgive me for asking, are you using it so much? Are your tyres loosing pressure all the time?
Nothing is perfect though, and the A2 is still a brilliant car.

John: surely there must be something wrong with your system then? I have never had sudden bursts of air from my climatronic system. You get it and it shows 1 digit. As the engine gets warmer it gradually goes up to 6 digits and when warm it goes to 8 say and then once that temp has been reached goes down to 3 digits and stay there for as long as the journey takes... and this is exactly the case with the Golf's climatronic as well. So I think a check of your system is due...

And have you read my post on how the Audi engineers designed the buttons to be used blind? (http://www.a2forum.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1421) If you learn to do this is is not dangerous to change the controls...

Johann, from what you say it appears that there is a problem. Me!The heater functions work exactly as you describe, and very clever they are to, but it always takes me by surprise when the temp adjusts automatically via the fan speed. I suppose that being an old git I'd prefer to set things myself. Another thing is ( don't laugh) being Ashmatic, I find the fan sucks in the fumes of all the old "knackers" (particularly cars with worn out petrol engines). Thanks anyway.

:D:D That is one other thing we can add to the list of things we'd want in the A2 (http://www.a2forum.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1427) the automatic resirculation thing you find on big BMW 7series and I guess the A8... it automatically closes the airflow from outside if it detects polution... at least our cars have pollen filters!

Two new ones to add for me.
  • Wind noise from driver door window
  • Boot which doesn't shut cleanly some of the time

Heh, heh, just noticed the 100 posts marker. Time to crack open another bottle of Hoegaarden.
