new air con compressor needed

Thank you every one for your help in previous threads. But at last car has been back to air con guy it seems he found that we need new air con compressor. At a cost of £500 all in. The local car dealer (not Audi) we brought the car of has gone very quiet on us. Before we took the car it was agreed in writing that he would pay for the repair of the aircon. The time delay has been the garage he uses has been shut due to holiday so it went to be checked out yesterday. I am hoping and praying the dealer doesn't go back on his word. Having just paid ourselves for a new cam belt to be fitted at our own garage as the car 06/2002 TDI with 53000 miles. Which was needed. Thank you all yet again for all your help I am alays intrested in what others always write on the treads.

I was blown away with the £35 road tax.
Can anyone tell me when the next service will be due last one done @ 20/07/06 or 59827 miles and what type of service and at what cost? (not Audi prices)

Bad news about the a/c, but as you say, hopefully the dealer will keep their word.

As for service, if you're on variable service intervals, then they are every 2 years or up to 30k miles, depending on driving style and journey type, so you could be looking at having the service as late as 89k miles.

The cost will be quite reasonable, as no cambelt work needs doing, but I would have a brake fluid change done and a good independant will probably charge about £150-200 for this.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks

Thanks Skipton01

Just one other need a new wipper for the front any ideas it is big isn't it.

And can you tell me who the other member is that has the Smart cars?

If it is the floppy wiper that you have, this can be bought from a Dealer or VAG Parts for around £14 and fitting yourself is dead easy. (Just look in the handbook).

As for the Smart - Chris, (ULP), owns one or should that be his better half does!! ;)

Cheers,

Darren

Hi A2return2
Think I mentioned this earlier but I highly recommend you have a diagnostic scan done before paying out for a new aircon compressor. Temperaure and pressure sensors in the system control how hard the compressor works so just one faulty sensor could virtually shut down the compressor. Sorry to say that most aircon 'specialists' probably have no experience on the variable displacement compressor used on our A2's
Talk this through with the dealer as he may be happy to pay for the diagnostics and maybe a new sensor or two. The worst case cenario is that you have a new compressor fitted and it does not cure the problem.

re. "As for the Smart"

Hi A2return2

Me too.

I've had two Smarts since 2000. The first was a lhd MK4 Silverstyle personal import - had it until 2002 when some plonker ran into the back of it when it was stationary. I've had the second since then - a silver MK6 Passion which is much upgraded and about to go on sale to contribute to covering the cost of my 'new' 2003 A2 1.4 tdi SE. If you know of anyone who would like details of the Smart, just email me.

Have a vagcom scan before shelling out on a new compressor, or wait until
you have the service done as they can scan it then and it shouldn't cost you to check for the faults.
My aircon was not working, so presumed it needed re-gassing.Took it to a gas conversion and aircon specialist in Macclesfield, had the system re gassed but the aircon was not working still. They told me it must be the pump and quoted to replace it.Not being stupid i asked if they had scanned
for faults, but was told they did not have the equipment to scan the car.
After speaking to vag parts, they told me it was unlikely to be the pump as they tend not to be problematic, but that the high and low pressure sensors
are known to become faulty.
When Mike (Skipton) came to fit my A2 with cruise control, he did a scan with his vagcom. This showed up a few electrical faults with the aircon.
Had it serviced a few days later and got them to check out the aircon.Ended up with a new high pressure sensor.Cost roughly £30 for sensor and 2 hours labour as the front bumper had to be removed to fit it.
It will most likely be a sensor rather than the pump. From memory, i was told that if the pulley on the pump can be freely rotated by hand then the pump is ok, but not too sure how to check this.I'm sure that someone on this forum will know where the pump is and how to check that the pulley moves freely.
Good luck, Brads.

Shame none of you live closer

It seems when it was regassed (don't they also put dye in it) the pump showed all the dye around it leaking out. The car dealer is now seeking a recon part so he doesn't have to shell out anymore than he has to.

I will print out and take all your comments back to the garage.
Anyone where is the pump!!!!!!!!
Wish you all live closer
alanm You might have heard of my son SMARTKID he was in the Smarttimes learnt to drive @ 16 as a disabled driver. We have a for2 & for4
1.5tdi 90bhp That is why we wanted the Audi A2 for my husband wanted a car that could do as well as the other two. LOL
Many Thanks

Hi Karen
The aircon pump is located directly below the alternator. You would probably need to remove the engine cover to see it. The attached picture from our gallery shows the engine without the cover and the alternator is in the bottom left of the pic....I checked with my wife for a female's description of the alternator...so here goes.....its the lump of alloy with square holes in it.........
