New Owner A2 Tdi 90

After many, many years of lurking on the forum reading about all of your wonderful A2's I have finally managed to buy one that I think is in excellent condition.

This is our fourth attempt at buying an A2, the last one put us off almost forever after traveling all the way from Liverpool to Colchester to pick up an A2 we'd "won" on eBay with what was described as having a small scratch on the side only to find after we arrived there it was a large gouge. The owner had emigrated to Canada unbeknown to us and the car was being "sold" by her sister who had no interest in the car or trying to contact her. That was a waste of £70 worth of diesel.

The other two were described as mint condition, but when we went to look at them they appeared to have been used as red leather lined dog kennels!

We gave up looking and put buying an A2 to the back of our minds even though my wife had always longed for one since they came out, which is quite difficult as Liverpool seems to be populated by the more A2's than anywhere else.
To make matters worse about a quarter of a mile away an elderly couple owned two, his and hers. Her's a silver 2003 75bhp tdi SE with leather, sunroof and parking sensors and his a crystal blue 2004 Sport 90 tdi with climate and disc changer, owned from six months old with 33,000 miles on the clock with full service history. Sadly her husband passed away in July.

I was bored and looking at private cars for sale locally and unbelievably this one was the nearest to our house for sale! I told my wife that I couldn't believe the A2 we had driven past for the last eight years was actually for sale. I rang them up to be told it had only been listed ten minutes earlier and a gentleman was desperate to come down from Yorkshire with the cash that evening. I had a test drive and agreed a price with her daughter and left a deposit. We collected it the next day.

So far we've had it valeted, wheels refurbished and a full service including the thermostat and sender as well as the fuel filter which was the original 2004 one. The next job is to have the drivers door realigned as its had a new hinge fitted, but is sitting about 2mm too low.

Ive also clayed the whole car with Bilt Hamber medium clay then Auto Glymed it which after 29 years of motoring is a first for me. I really couldn't believe the difference!!!

I've managed to get a nos set of the correct black mats with blue trim as the car has blue seats with black panels and I'd like a set of front mud flaps.

One of the things I've noticed about the car is that the front windows both have scratches on them, is this common as I'd like to source some replacements or would they go the same way?

The car was a 20th wedding anniversary gift for my wife and she's very happy with it.

VERY VERY nice.

Well done for hanging in there, you won't be sorry I am sure.

Have fun

Thanks very much for that Steve, I went through the whole "it must have leather, Bose sunroof....thing" and realised if I was going to get a nice car it was better off getting a cared for car rather than a fully specced up abused car.

Another question I wanted to ask is it common to remove the left footrest?

We plan on keeping the car for a very long time so over the years I'll hopefully be able to pick up a set of leather seats as I've always been very impressed with the quality of the leather.

I am not sure of the left footrest, but I would not remove mine, I tend to "ride the clutch" if I don't have a rest for my left foot, but everyone is different (thankfully).

You will find a leather interior reasonably easily, they are often on eBay but I bought a set from WASSAP on here for £350 including some door cards.

Not sure if or where I will use them, but I couldn't resist them at that price.

They are at my friendly specialist leather trimmer being professionally cleaned and "connolised". He is making them a shade darker too (the right way), they were too dark for a light grey interior and too light for a black / dark grey interior. They may go into my next car, but they are not heated and I want every extra on my next A2, I only hope I have the patience to hold out for it too.`

Looks incredibly tidy, great photo too.
Good luck with what you have planned.
I did the opposite and suffered a small amount on condition for the sake of options. But I'm slowly improving the condition and I don't have to worry about adding too much.
As for the front windows, I'm not sure about anybody else but mine have the odd small scratch but nothing too bad at all. I keep meaning to have ago at polishing them out a bit, but I may wait until after winter now.

Every Extra?
That's bold, but would you bother with things like the tow bar?

To me knowledge, removing the left foot rest has never been done, but I'm currently in the process of investigating how easily this can be achieved. Although its not a difficult job, doing it to look OEM is nevertheless not a straightforward task, requiring multiple parts intended for LHD cars as well as a bit of fettling.
I want to remove it because my feet are too big for it. I can't fit my shoe between the clutch pedal and the kick panel. Although I can get my foot onto it if I tuck my foot under the clutch pedal, the foot rest is too short for my foot, meaning it supports little other than my toes and makes the bridge of my foot uncomfortable.

I'll be sure to post once I've succeeded.

Cheers,

Tom

It would not be a challenge that I would set myself to have every extra, even if I had no need for it, just a desire to have a fully specced A2.

I have told myself a million times, not to exaggerate !!!!!!!!!

When I say left footrest I mean the drivers side as this has been removed in our car and leaves lots of room to put the drivers left foot. There's actually a receipt in the service history to remove the drivers left footrest???

So is there a metal bracket visible, or has that been removed as well? Is there a small area that's left uncarpeted as a result of the removal?

Tom

Tom, the right side trim cover for the console tunnel, if I can call it that, "engages" into a slot moulded in the foot rest and the footrest is bolted to the car floor. If the plan is to remove the footrest completely, the bracket must go too. The trim cover for the LH drive cars should be longer to accommodate the vacant space left by the removed footrest and bracket.

I'll have a look on ETKA tonight for the part numbers and enquire availability from my contacts at Audi.

Thanks Tony. I've already bought the carpet from a LHD A2, but I will need the part you describe; the longer kick board with its own little Torx25 mounting point.
The carpet will need to have a slot cut for the steering column, but that should be easy enough.

Apologies to the OP for the thread swerve.

Cheers,

Tom
