Mum has decided she wants a PC for surfing and general office type stuff - no games. Just a simple, no frills PC.
Where are the best deals to be found at present. Probably going to be looking at the £400-500 area.

Also, what do people recommend as a good broadband provider?

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.

I find the PC Advisor forum (the consumer watch board) is a great place for people's PC experience. Try here http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk

I am on the verge of buying a Dell PC-had one a few years ago and nothing went wrong with it (apart from user error!). They currently have some good offers on-double memory, free printer and money off-all at the same time. This site also get 10% off the above http://www.ukfrenzy.co.uk/dell.htm

I've never tried them myself, but I don't here many people talking highly of the PC World/Dixons/The Computer World.

If you want on-the-high-street PC's, try Evesham-pricey but usually get good customer service and quality write ups http://www.evesham.com/

Good luck!.

Maybe you should look into buying a Mac for her... I did so for my dad, and he´s really happy surfing the web and writing stuff. I don´t have to help him too often with his eMac. I think they are around £650 in the UK...

Bye, Frido.

There are 4 Dells in the family, no probs at all, everyone delighted. They seem quite flexible regarding the package you buy, one friend asked if they could include a floppy drive, they supplied it installed for a fiver.

Put my order in for the Dell-just await delivery now.

As for Broadband, I've been with Pipex for a few months now-very impressed. Order and delivery of modem was swift and set up was a breeze. In all the time I've used the service, I've only been disconnected once, and never had trouble connecting.

A quick update on the Dell-ordered last Thursday, phone call today to say delivery will be this Thursday between 6pm and 10pm. Providing it does arrive, that is very good service.

Rob-it's true-a new mobo and processor can be had cheaply enough. HD's are much of a muchness from what I've read-even the latest tech isn't that far ahead of your bog standard disc. Through in a graphics intergrated motherboard, and broadband and she's singing......so why have I just paid £1k for a new pc......

Probably the same reason I paid £1200 back in '96 for a 200Mhz Pentium 1. Then in 2000 spent another £1000 building the system I have now.

To have a system that will last days, not hours before it is dated and obsolete.;)

Spoke to a guy yeaterday who'd spent the thick end of £2500 on a 386 back in the '80's. Ouch, that's gotta hurt looking back now!

New A2 on order - Ebony Black, Red Leather + many other options.

I remember paying £1400 hundred for a Pentium (original) 166 (and without MMX!), 32meg ram, less than 2gb hd, 15 inch monitor, some poor graphics card about 5 years ago. Then £1200 for my present Athlon 900mhz, 256mb ram, 30gb hd.

Now for my £1k I'm getting Pentium 4 2.6ghz, 800mhz front side bus, 512mb DDR 400 ram, 60gb HD, 17 inch digital flat panel, 128mb 9800 graphics card.

So I expect in a couple of years to pick up a 4ghz Pentium do-dah, 2ghz front side bus, 2gb ram, 500gb hd, 21 inch flat panel for about £10.........if only!!!!

I remember buying a 28.8k modem for £140 only a few years ago!

There was a Dell flyer in the Sunday Times a couple of weeks ago - basic spec (2.1 GHz I think) PC with monitor, speakers etc £299 plus VAT and delivery.

I would think this was a Dell reconditioned PC-they do a big trade in PC's (presumably corporate contract returns) where they check them over etc and re-sell them.

Not a bad price at all!.

I knew it would go wrong as soon as I mentioned it. Waited in on Thursday night, between 6pm and 10pm as advised by Dell-no PC. Phoned the automated order line and it confirmed order shipped-but gave courier number phoned them and got some company name, logged onto their website and found they had tried to deliver the PC at 4.30pm, no one was in but card left...

1. I was at home at 4.30pm
2. No card was on my doormat at anytime
3. 4.30pm is not between 6pm and 10pm

Phoned courier and (cutting long story short) they sub-contract to a local courier who confirmed they had gone to wrong address....they thought as much!....

1. A local courier should know the address
2. If they realised didn't they try and contact me

Anyway I can't collect as it's not Dell policy (probably credit card/fraud etc so I can see why), so another delivery attempt will be made on Monday night.

Can't complain about Dell build time-from order to delivery (well attempted) in one week. I will complain about the courier though!.

Good news-PC arrived tonight at about 7pm. All set up and it is bloomin fantastic.

The screen is just fab, Windows XP looks a lot better than ME (I'll await the blue screens of death....)
