noisy rear drum brakes

2002 1.4 tdi/se fitted with rear drums.

There is a noise which sounds like the shoes rubbing on the rear nearside ..took off the drums, good clean out, adjusted the handbrake...holding well.......Still get the sound as if the shoes are catching on the drums.....
any ideas....???????????????????:)

It could be a wear lip in the brake drum catching the shoes - which can be ground off with a little care.
Sometimes 'centering' the shoes helps - with the back wheels off the ground, lightly apply the handbrake till the wheel just turns then apply the foot brake a few times. If this does not work, try applying the footbrake first, then pull on the handbrake at the same time. Usually with a bit of trial and error the rubbing noise can be virtually eliminated.
If its safe, park with the car in gear and the handbrake off, particularly in wet weather

Cheers Spike
