Oil drain plug?

Hi Dave
I think Mike may have been thinking 'engine oil'
The gearbox drain plug is hidden under the bottom engine 'pendulum' support which is bolted to the bottom of the gearbox.

Whoops, yes, well spotted Spike.

On a separate note though, why would you want to drain the gearbox oil - it is filled for life, unless exceptional circumstances occur, which may merit a top up. It's not a commodity that should be changed ordinarily, unlike the engine oil.

Cheers,

Mike

Well the benefits are marginal but in my view the oil will oxidise and absorb moisture over time so changing it every few years is not a bad idea.
For anyone doing this I would recommend they stick with genuine Audi gearbox oil. On previous Audis I tried a few specialist full synthetic transmission oils and all made the gearchange worse - bad enough for me to change back at great expense.

For those with chipped cars, the ABT Tuning recommend the gearbox oil is changed regularly (30,000 km?) due to the increased loading of the transmission.

Isn't the gearbox a sealed unit? If such is the case, how can humidity enter and create problems?

The A2 gearbox has a breather which allows air movement inside the box.
Some manufacturers don't fit oil fill and drain plugs but add the oil during assembly of the box. These are sometimes classed as 'sealed' units - but they will still have a breather.
