Oil Usage 1.4

Hi

Anyone give me an idea what the expected oil usage is for the standard 1.4 petrol A2 running on long life oil ?

Just had the min oil light come on again, this is only 1200 miles after it was checked by the local stealer and only a month and a half after the service.
250ml seemed to top it up but its a bit alarming.

There seems to be no oil on the drive where its parked, the engine bay looks spotless and not noticed any blue smoke when driving around but it seems to be going somewhere. Any thoughts

Thanks
sw

Oil usage

I can't give you an exact figure on usage but can confirm that my 1.4 petrol also gets through the longlife oil (and it's not cheap stuff...) I would estimate similar figures to yours. The car is not smoky, and engine bay etc. is clean.

Having said that, I topped up a bit enthusiastically last time and am still waiting for the level to drop.

Hope this reassures you.

Many thanks. I was begining to worry I'd bought a dud!!

Anyone know if reverting to conventional oil and fixed servicing still results in similar oil usage?

Rather odd, my 1.4 has indicated low oil today, about 1 month after first service:confused: I have topped up today with 250ml and will keep an eye on it.

Sounds about right for a 1.4 petrol. I buy a 1 litre bottle and keep it in the boot as my oil light always seems to come on in the outside lane of the motorway at warp factor.....250ml normally sorts it out....that said the first time the beep comes in can be a little disconcerting...especially when the bottom of the dipstick breaks off as per a previous thread...

Hi, Am new A2 owner (55kW tdi). Just reading your oil threads, as my light's just come on too. Have any of you tried doing your own oil changes? We all know the A2 is far from conventional in it's set-up. A quick look underneath reveals not sump/bottom of engine but a nicely scratched piece of plastic moulding. Perhaps the oil has to be pumped out when doing a full change?

That'll be the plastic undertray you can see. Remove that and you'll see the underneath of the engine. I've serviced my own A2, refilled with the correct amount of oil and still get the oil beep a couple of months later - its just a 1.4 petrol thing I am afraid. For what its worth Audi should never have made a petrol version of the A2 just the diesel and a hybrid....

Oils and service

Hi
We just bought a 2001 1.4 SE petrol which has done 52K - they seem great little cars with character and a rarety bonus.
The onboard tells me the next service is due in 2K but I have now noticed in the service book that the last service at 41K was not Audi or longlife oil (is this just a fully synthetic oil)
I have run a V8 BMW on Miller Fully Synthetic 0W40W for 5 years/70K with 10K servces (and intermediate filter change). Would this oil be comparable with the stuff Audi/ you experienced A2 servicers would use?
Also any idea what to kind of hit on the wallet to expect if i were to put it into Audi for this servce?
Thanks for any comments/help

Mark. There are plenty of posts on this site re service costs, look 'em up. My cheapest at an independant Audi specialist was £145, my dearest at Audi main dealership was £445, I use a VW main agent and it's £245(from memory) all for the same service. Caveat Emptor.

Oils and service

Thanks for that - I couldn't immediately see the service information as a newcomer to the site. Ive booked her in for a maindealer inspection service in York with a quote of £263.
Also picked up from chatting to mechanics that the consumption of the fully synthetic long life oil in Audis and VWs should reduce once the engine is past 30K miles.

I have a 1.4 petrol SE and can anyone recommend which oil I buy to keep it 'topped up'?? It is on the variable service plan. Thanx Jimmy

My experience is heavy right foot stop/start traffic uses far more oil on my A2. And usually when the light comes on, I fill in a full 1L bottle. Mainly because I don't want a half full bottle to spill into the car through the pouch like before!

You may find the car manual states the specification 5W30. I used to get Castrol SLX Longlife II (what the dealer uses), which is now branded as Castrol Edge 5W30 in a gold bottle at Halfords. Price has also increaed from 12 pounds per 1L bottle to 13.99. You may also find Castrol GTX Magnetec 5W30, but that is for Ford engines and much cheaper too. Just stick with the gold bottle, it says for variable service Audi/VW on the label.

I bought the oil from dealer before and it was same price. Shop around online you won't find much cheaper deals.

do all a2's have an oil level sensor? If so how much oil is needed from light on to fill to max mark on dipstick?
The dipstick on my 1.6FSI is black and is a real sod to read.

I think oil level sensor is standard on all A2s. Waiting to be corrected by members with a full specification, I think the petrol A2s has a 3L oil reserve. I've always managed to put a full litre in when the light comes on. I live close to a few Halfords so it is not too much of a problem to get another bottle and put it in the pouch.

You'll also find many members here agree with you that the dip stick is next to useless!

Don't forget we get Club discount from Opie Oils. To qualify you need our discount card and to register with them. This gives access to the their special price list. They stock Castrol Edge and other quality oils and their prices include postage on orders over £30 -see link to standard price list

PS. Have any of the petrol A2 owners tried painting the dipstick end white. It will need a thorough degreasing first but may be worth the effort.

Cheers Spike

thanks humps.
I am OK for oil at the moment as I bought 3 x 4l of Edge from a guy in york for £22 each! I did a random check to make sure they were not full of veg oil! Oil change on mine due in next few weeks. I might just try the tippex idea.

A couple of weeks back my low level indicator came on for the first time since I bought the A2 14 months ago. I've kept a regular check on it and topped up 250ml every so often. I poured in what I had of the SLX Longlife II Audi provided and went on the look for some more to keep in the boot. Found this new Edge stuff in Halfords and bought the replacement for SLXII Longlife. I noticed that the Edge replacement for SLXII is 5W30 whereas the SLXII was 0W30. I presume this is OK? Also noticed that the Edge oil is the typical yellowish brown oily colour one would expect, however, the SLXII Longlife stuff was sort of bogey green. These differences have made me wonder whether I've bought the right stuff, but it clearly says VW/Audi on the bottle...

I'm sure you bought the right oil. Last time I used the SLX Longlife III, which is 5W-30 as well. Edge 5W-30 is the next generation of VW 504.00/507.00 oils.

Unfortunetaly we don't have Edge yet, Hungary is not so important market for Castrol such as UK or Germany :(

I'm a fellow sufferer of the fragile dipstick syndrome, how much do the pesky thigs cost to replace?I've owned an'02 TDI for just over 2 years now and the only problems have both been concentrated into 1sq ft at the front-the aforementioned dipstick whose design Audi must have sub-contracted out;and a pig obstinate catch on the "grill" access panel which will be the cause of my first coronary. But what the hell, I can never fall out for very long with a car this cute.
