Ok, satnav second attempt...

OK, so I found out that the car I've bought doesn't have the DIS fitted so won't work properly with the basic sat-nav system (I know, I know - the rest of the car was perfect so I bought on sight without checking). Just as well I managed to sell the nav system for what it cost me. Anyway, two questions now arise:

- is it possible to retro-fit the DIS or is it a complete waste of time/money?

- does the Satnav Plus system work ok without DIS being present or will it throw a wobbly?

Kind of get the feeling that I'm playing King Canute with this but if you dont ask...:)

Hi jembob

The only way to retrofit DIS is to replace the whole instrument cluster. This would give you the display but i'm not sure what else is needed / involved in getting the DIS to function.
If you don't already have the Symphony radio, SatNav+ gets very expensive to install. For starters youy need the double DIN size cage to mount everything in and possibly another climate control panel. All the fascia panels on the satnav unit are different so only the one designed for the A2 will fit and these are pretty rare on E.bay. From what I have read, DIS is not essential and if you don't have that, you won't need a TMC box which makes installation a bit cheaper.

Thanks Spike - actually seen one posted specifically for an A2, hence the question. I have the lower aircon unit already but would need to buy the double-DIN cage to fit above as you say. Given the rarity of A2s with factory-fit sat nav (I don't really like the after-market types) I still prefer to go this route.

Tks for the advice.

Hi jembob
Firts the good news - unlike other Audo models, you don't appear to need a double Din cage. And now the bad - you appear to need a whole new dash instead - see link below. Not sure if it is possible to adapt your existing dash- Maybe there is something on the German A2 site

Thanks to Xiter for supplying the ETKA Online parts catalogue link in an earlier post

As far as I know (several members of the german forum have done it) you need a new climate control panel, but the existing dash can be adapted to double DIN so a SatNav+-Unit will fit. You can use either the old one (RNS-D) or the new one (RNS-E) depending on your budget.

bye, Frido.
