Polo tdi 2002 arb and wishbone bushes

Hi guys, it's not an A2 but I was wondering if u guys can help.
The rear bush's on the lower arms on my missus' polo TDI 9N are past it and squeaking. Are these part of the lower arm and replaced as a whole unit or are they pressed into the subframe of the car? If they are pressed into the subframe are they hard to remove?

Also, I have traced the source of a knocking sound to the ARB bushes. The plastic sleeves have fallen out of them causing excessive movement. Is it possible to buy replacement bushes cheaply, and what size will I need? I have looked on a few websites and there is a choice of 3 sizes of ARB bushes for this model 16mm, 18mm and 19mm I think. How do I know what size to order?

Thanks in advance! ;)

Hi Mitch, you just need to measure the 'diameter' of you own AR Bush bar (where the sleeves fit), then pop along to your local vw dealer and purchase a pair of bushes (that dia), they are Approx £5/6 the pair,
Cheers Alan.

Alan has answered the second part of your query and now to the first part:

The bushes are bonded in place and require special tools to press out the old bush and install the new one.

Unless you are tooled up, you'd be as well getting this done at an independant specialist - it's going to work out cheaper in the long run, unless you plan on going into business changing wishbone bushes!

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mitch
On A2 rollbars with the plastic sleeves, the 16mm bushes are the ones everyone uses. With the remainder of the plastic sleeves removed they should be a tight fit on the rollbar. Double check by measuring the dia as pamanal suggested.
If you could change the parts yourself it is worth checking the price of new lower arm support housings as the labour charges for changing the bushes may be more expensive

Cheers Spike
