power steering!!! + tracking

my first post....

here it goes, i was driving my wifes A2tdi 75 to work today and noticed the steering keeps 'sticking' and goes from being heavy to light, i'm assuming the fluid needs topping up?
i had the bonnet off at work today to check the level of the fluid but couldn't see any power steering fluid resevoir????

is there one? and if so where is it?

on another note, had the tracking checked and adjusted 3/4 times now and the car still feels like its not pulling straight, one of the guys noticed the subnframe had been replaced recently ( before we purcheased it ) could there be somethin wrong there? light knocking every now and then fron the supsension sometimes when braking or cornering never over speed hump's though

look forward to your advice

Hi and welcome, Power steering reservoir is located behind the nearside (passengers) headlight.

As for the not pulling straight, question is why was the subframe replaced? has is been in a collision? I think a thorough inspection is needed and this should include all the suspension too. The springs will need to be checked for being broken as well.

A tracking specialist may be the next stop as opposed to the general workshops, as all four wheels may need to be realigned.

It sounds like something's been replaced and/or botched up here - the knocking is almost certainly the ARB or drop links and if the subframe isn't aligned correctly, it'll be adding to the issues.

Leaky steering racks are starting to become more common on the A2 as they get older, so this needs to be checked for - if the reservoir has dropped, you got to ask why? They don't 'burn' off the fluid, as per oil in an engine - the on;y reason for the fluid to drop is if there's a leak somewhere.

You need to get this checked out and sooner rather than later really.

Cheers,

Mike
