Power Steering

I have an A2 1.4tdi 90 Sport and my wife an A2 1.4 SE petrol. Yes his
and hers but one has to go as I currently also have two Porsches for my
sins. One a 924 Carrera GT from 1981 which I guess has an Audi Turbo lump in it.

On my wifes A2 the power steering warning light comes on occasionally
and sometimes it looses power assistance but not when light is on. Audi dealer or local independent doesn't seem to know what is wrong. All they say is it could be one of two things each are around £500.00 plus fitting of at least another £500. Diagnostics do not show up anything either even after the dash light comes on.

Only seems to do this when its wet so think it must be some kind of
electrical fault. Anyone out there had a similar problem as dont want to spend 1k on a hunch.

I had a similar problem a few/couple of times with my 1.6 FSI when backing out of the drive and turning hard right (hand down). It would disappear almost immediately and only happened when car was cold. I assumed it was belt for power steeing pump (if it had one). Mentioned it at VSI service. Dealer found no problem and it never happened again. Perhaps they adjusted the belt?
PS. Not sure whether 1.6 had a belt drive or an electric pump and too late to check now!
