proscan v400 wont connect to car???

Hi all, thanks in advance for your time!

Well having spent just over £200 at the vass specialist to try and fix an abs problem only to be told it can be another £600 to chase out the problem I have decided to try and fix the sensors myself......basically can't afford to have a garage change each part at a cost of £200 per sensor.....

I therefore have bought a proscan v400 as I was told this would read the error codes and allow me to reset them......the problem is that the unit will not connect to the car!

Thinking it may be a blown fuse, I have checked all the fuses in the fuse box (below steering wheel) but all the fuses are fine!!!

So my question is whether there is another fuse somewhere on the car that might have blown and is preventing power getting to the proscan???

I really need to get the car fixed before the mot runs out and the beeping of the abs warning is really starting to get on my nerves, and now the engine management warning light is on and I want to know what is wrong with the car so I can replace the parts.........without having to spend another £30 for a garage to do a diagnostic!

Your help and guidance will be much appreciated!!

Levi.

Have you turned the ignition on?
Was the A2 listed as compatible with this particular code reader?

Do you have the original radio or an aftermarket radio?
I have seen it claimed that a non-oem radio if installed incorrectly can cause the OBD port to electrocute anything plugged into it.

Do you have another car you can try it on?

Does it show any signs of life?

Do the cables look ok?

John

I have followed the instructions to the letter, by connecting to proscan to the obd port and turning on the ignition (without cranking the engine)......but the unit does not start up.

The unit is new and is meant to be the correct one for all Audi cars from 1990.....mines a 2000 A2, so should work!

There is an after market stereo in the car......is this likely to be a problem? If so how can a garage run a diagnostic using the same port??

Cheers for your help!

... If so how can a garage run a diagnostic using the same port?? ...

They can't, they can only temporarily disconnect the stereo to see if that fixes the problem. The issue is that some aftermarket wiring-looms / head-units short the diagnostic wires together.

Just went out and pulled the stereo out but alas it makes not a bit of difference......

Suppose I need to double check the fuses.......just annoying that the fuses don't appear to match the owners manual, and appear to be exactly opposite to what it says.....and it's a pain to pull the small fuses out.....

Then I will have to find another vag car to trial this silly diagnostic tool on to rule out it being faulty!!!!

The garage did not seam to have any issues connecting to the car without worrying about the stereo......so I can only think it's a fuse, the unit is faulty or there is something silly like the abs ecu preventing the scanner from working......but that said I would expect the scanner to show something and not just an off screen!!!!

Sorry for the questions....

I think that you need to contact the retailer really - there's a reason why VCDS is so popular despite the expense and that's because it works and is really well supported by the manufacturers.

I've not heard of an ABS ecu blocking a diagnostic tool and it would seem that the unit is not functioning properly.

Yes, it seems like the diagnostic tool needs a diagnostic tool to determine what is up with it.

Well at least this brought a smile to my face!!!

Will contact the vendor to say I suspect the unit is faulty and take it from there......thanks all for your input, it is much appreciated!

Just want to get this silly abs fault sorted and get onto enjoying the car.....

Just one more quick one if I can.......may should silly but will it be ok to go ahead with changing the nearside abs sensor and wheel speed sensor and then reset the fault codes in a few days time??

You could change the nearside wheel speed sensor and/or loom, but you might as well wait until you know exactly what the fault is - unless you know it's at fault, you might be changing perfectly good units.

However, yes, you can change now and fault clear later.

Thanks......

Well the vass specialists when they did a diagnostic a few weeks back said the codes related to the nearside wheel speed and abs sensors, so I have bought these to sort that problem, the stupid diagnostic tool I bought was meant to help me reset those faults and find out if there was anything else I need to do.....

Think I will just go ahead with changing the sensors and see if a local garage will reset the error codes until I can sort out a working scanner.

Thanks for now,

Levi.

Thing is, there's not a speed sensor and an abs sensor, so it could be due to wiring, or even an internal fault in the abs controller.

You could end up paying more to get no further forward.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, my disability has been playing up the last couple of days and i have not had the ability to get online.

Right, the vendor sent me another scanner and it works a treat. It turns out that it is a fault with the front left ABS sensor and an intermittent fault with the rear right ABS sensor. I already have the front left ABS sensor and just wondered as i actually have 2 of them weather they are the same shaped sensors.......i.e can i use the second sensor to replace the faulty one on the rear right of the car? I want to get all the parts ready so when i am feeling well enough over the coming week to do the repairs i have all the bits i need.......

Of course if i could i would go and have a look myself, but restricted movment sees me trying to find out online from you nice people!
