Noticed lastnite that the glovebox light stays on when the lights are on, is this right or is there a faulty switch somewhere?

Also on the top of the dash theres a panel that looks like it might be there for something on higher specced cars, what is it and can I make it into useable storage space?

The light should be on if light is on. This is normal. Will be not on when the glovebox door is closed.
And this in the dash: It is NOT good for anything. You can not open this, there is not much space under it. But shure, one or two German fellows did opend it and installed something, but just forget it

and if you want to be sure that the light is turning off in the glove box when you close it then just hold your breath really good, stick your head in it (has a lot of room in there) and shut it nice and tight. If the light turns off and you survive then it works fine!

Erstens is quite correct on both fronts. The dash bit you mention is on;y a decorative moulding, but because the air vents pass directly underneath, there is no more than 1 inch of space. On some othe VW models, they have a storage tray here, but it's too shallow and stuff would keep coming out every time you braked.
