Rear mounted bike rack?

Thanks I will do that.

I got a quote for £230 for 2 racks, Thule system with A2 feet, aluminium bars and 2 510 aluminium cycle racks all with matching set of keys...

But will visit Halfords first IF they have A2 feet!

To James: I wasn't really suggesting that you'd buy them from Holland. Could prove to be difficult with sending & paying. But if you really want to: a roofrack is 'dakdrager' in Dutch. Combine that with A2 and you're there.
Even easier: go to any auction site (English ones!) and look for 'Audi A2'. Anything A2 related will show up. I've seen headlights, seats, body panels and bumpers. And the roofrack of course. I found mine the latter way.

As for price: my dealer quoted me around 180 euro (120 pound). Won't hurt to ask just to make sure, will it?

I doubt whether Halfords has any A2 stuff. I don't really like their own system. I looked once for a (very common) Renault Clio 3dr and it was really stupid. The original renault ones were better. Halfords is good for stationwagons that already have bars and just need crossbars (still have those..)
Thule is of course great, but probably the most expensive.

BTW: haven't fitted my 2nd hand A2 original yet. But they're aluminium of course and look great. The front one has a very little plastic spoiler to reduce wind noise, but I don't know if it works.

Also note that Audi supplies you with a special wrench which allows you to tighten the rack at the correct tension (Nm). It a piece of steel that will twist/deform and show that through some plastic thingy. Very handy. I guess that random tightening can hurt your A2! Be carefull with 3rd party systems!

Just a suspicion having looked at the image of the rack above, but I'm guessing that it didn't make it to production because for a rear mounted bike rack it's sitting ridiculously high up from the car. The difference in height of the bike handle bars from the ground compared with the A2 roof is quite a big one, which for me defeats the whole point in a rear mounted bike rack, hence it not making production! Which probably left Audi with the thought of 'oh, well if it's that high up just scrap it and they can make do with the standard roof rack'.

Obviously nobody from Audi thought about this when designing the car, but then again why should they sacrifice the design of a car for a bike rack. I do find it hard to believe having said that, that Audi don't now have a solution for this available at the dealers, as there are always engineering solutions for things like this, if they have the technology to build the car in the first place it can't be that difficult for them to source a creative solution for this... ...can it?

Happy hunting!!

To swiv:

Thanks for the reply, I think I will have a hunt on ebay. And also ask my dealer. I will let you all know how I get on.

The torque wrench (?) sounds like it's a pretty important tool to be supplied with for this particular design of car; must be something to do with the Aluminium body's (relative) lack of crush strength in certain situations...

Thanks again, for thoughts, opinions and information.

Drove the 31 miles to the www.roofrack.co.uk place in Sevenoaks and they fitted a sample A2 rack and if you adjust it in a slightly different angle it doesn't rest mostly on the glass, but more on the side body panels... They were happy with adjusting the feet slightly too to miss glass roof more! It certainly felt sturdy enough. And they said once the two cycle racks are fitted accross it will be even sturdier... VERY helpful guys and they know their stuff. Brilliant service.

So I bought it!!!!!!!!!! They agreed that the rear mounted system would not work with the top edge of the hatch being a 12mm glass lip... and then when you close it the glass is very glass to the glass of the roof...

I got the Thule Rapid System 750, with 861 aluminium aero bars, the 1195 A2 kit and then they changed all the locks so the two roof bars share the same lock as the two 510 upright cycle racks. Some places charge to do that - I saw prices up to about £25 - where roofrack.co.uk did it for free... All in £230.75.

Biking here we come! Just in time for winter to start!!!!

Not a bad price really! Good to hear that it all works and fits well. How does it look in situ?

I popped into Whites Audi (now Wimbledon Audi) in Colliers Wood yesterday, and asked for prices...

130 + VAT for the roof bars and 80 quid + VAT for one(1)cycle rack! Bloody 'ell.[3]

A boot liner comes in at 56 quid + VAT! vagparts charge 25 + VAT for the self same item. So, Martyn, when are you going to start supplying OE roof racks and cycle carriers?

;)

I also asked how much a boot floor costs (as I took mine out, put it to one side and then stupidly forgot to take it into my flat... Result: It was cleared away by the council as rubbish! :()

They want 80 quid + VAT for that. Outrageous!

So, I'm hoping Martyn will be able to get one of those on order at a rather more reasonable price....when I have some spare cash.

Anyone know if it's worth asking if he can do special orders? Or will VAG only supply certain items to dealers?

Fingers crossed for a positive answer to the above.
