Rental car driving report: Hummer H2

Hello!

I'm currently on Holiday driving up the US West coast, and just wanted to share the experiences with the rental car I got with you.
The car really is the opposite of the A2: a Hummer H2.
I asked the rental car people at SFO airport for a car with lots of room for bags, and that's what I got (and for the price of the full size car):

What they did not tell me is that 1/3 of the trunk is taken up by a 315/70 R17 Spare Wheel... so it is not so roomy, after all.
The car drives surprisingly well on paved roads, the engine (6ltr-V8 with 335 hp) is quiet, although the car weighs 3,4t empty, so it has to work to get it going.
It was quite a nightmare to drive it in San Francisco traffic, but was fun taking it up the Oregon coast. Gas mileage was horrible, about 13 mpg, and even here it is expensive to fill the 32 gallon tank.
If anyone is interested, I`ll post more pictures...

Greetings from rainy Washington state...

Frido.

Fantastic. A hire car that size? Imagine those being given out by Avis at your local airport. Oh the fun of Hummers going straight over roundabouts....

Steve - A couple of A2's, then a Corolla, now an Avensis T3-X 2.0 Auto

Will post more pictures of it as soon as I can....
Have now exchanged the Hummer for an Inifinti FX35, because a Hummer in Seattle and Vancouver traffic would not be much fun (especially in parking garages, which are simply not high enough for that monster, I even kept hitting the ceiling on the rental-car dropoff in Seattle airport...

Will report more when I get the chance..

Bye, Frido.

Do you need a crane to lift the spare out?

1.4 Petrol Special Edition, Ebony Black, grey leather, heated seats, climate, opensky, five spoke alloys for SWMBO (Replaced a 2002 1.4 Petrol SE) Honda Accord Tourer 2.2 iCDTi for me.

Have not tried to lift the Spare... but I imagine it is pretty heavy....

Nice !!

I'm going to the states in September.
And we've rented a Chevrolet Trailbalzer, hopefully the one with the V8 HEMI engine....

Did you specifically order the humvee or was it a free upgrade ? At what company did you rent it ?

We're off to Canada on Saturday and have booked a Luxury 4x4 for the fortnight - wonder if we'll get a Humvee.

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.
Was a Merlot Red 1.4SE petrol originally.
Now an Ebony Black 1.4SE petrol with Red Leather, CC, Symphony + all the previous options we had.

I rented the car at Hertz, and I just booked "fullsize-4door". At the counter I asked for a car with room for lots of bags, and they offered me a $10/day upgrade to the Hummer (which is a "prestige-collection"-vehicle, normally $225/day, not the $75 I paid.
The Trailblazers I saw over here all had the V6, and the "Luxury-4x4" at Hertz are normally Ford Excursions, if you´re lucky, you might get a Lincoln Navigator or a Cadillac Escalade...

Bye, Frido.

We didn't get the Humvee. Our chariot is a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. First impressions are that they forgot the luxury element. Very basic and plasticy. I'll give more of a report once we've done a few more miles. Not even sure what engine it's got yet - will have to have a look today.

LOL most tests of that Jeep concurs what you just said. It ain't no Luxury car at all with horrid plastics and a generally terrible interior... Though you pay luxury car price for it! Also handles awful on the road (where it spends most of its time) and is apparently faultless off-road (where it spends nearly no time). So I think Merc/Chrysler had their priorities wrong unfortunately... But enjoy the excess anyway!!!

4.7L V8. Quite nippy considering it must weigh approx 2.5T, but like Johann said, not that good on the open road - very wobbly.
