Right hand side coil spring broken

Finally, got both pairs of front suspension springs and bearings replaced at Abtech in Totton last Friday. I had them replace the air and fuel filters at the same time, adjust the tracking (which I already knew was needed) and a new wiper blade.

Parts £149, labour £166 (for 2 1/2 hours), with VAT on top.

Probably not the cheapest I could get, but I was very pleased with their work.

been shopping around. Lion garage in leicester & loughborough (independant vw and audi) both told me its only neccessary to replace the broken one and not the pair. They would do one first and see how it sits, and 9 out of 10 are fine.
Their quote comes in at £160, with vat.

i done mine (drivers side) cost me 45 quid for the spring and 21 quid for the top bearing but my god it was a pain to fit skipton was right if you can get someone else to do it!!!!

spring pop

Yup my front left spring poped into 2 last week and needed the bearings sorted - its an 02 with almost 60k. Had a few other bits sorted too whilst in, seems the starter motor and engine temp monitor were on their way out too.
BTW the engine temp monitor is the main reason for the poor start after short journeys. Changed this and touch woon, no problems.

I've just joined the club!

Over the weekend I noticed a jangly clanking sound coming from the rear passenger side on my Y plate A2 with 44k miles on the clock. It happened every time I went over a bump (even things as small as drain covers).

The front anti-roll bar is apparently quite badly corroded too so they're swapping that out whilst they've got it up in the air.

They've decided it could do with the cam belt swapping too.

Good job I've just been paid!

:hey guys, i seem to be getting more of a clutter than a clunk on the on the driver side front, im guessing its the same problem? any help would be appreciated,

thanks again,
Naz:)

The passenger side spring broke on our 03 a few months back. Audi charged us £300 to replace it. They only did the one side.

The main symptom was a grinding noise when turning the wheel. The broken part of the spring seemed to be scraping against the bearning. They replaced that too.

However, there is scraping noise on that side when the steering is hard locked. It's not the normal power steer pump noise, definitely something rubbing.

I also notice that the rubber cover for the shock isn't secured at the top. Anyway I can fix this? It was sloppy by the garage to leave it that way.

Thx.

Just joined the club. My wife was driving it home from work when it snapped. Front driver's side. At least 10-12cm of the spring broken off (which she handed me - while I handed her the keys to my car.) Now waiting for her to pick me up. The AA patrol said not to drive it in case it drops onto the wheel. If it was nearer the weekend - I'd do it myself, but I'm 25 miles from home and the car can't be moved. Will put it to a specialist tomorrow.

I've ordered the spring and top bearing mount from Aberdeen Audi. Parts will arrive tomorrow (Thursday). The hassle is I can't find a garage who can fit it until next week at the earliest, or the ones that can do - are using non-Audi parts and will cost me an arm and a leg. I had read the posts about non-Audi springs possibly being shorter - hence Audi only part. I'm only doing one side too.

Anyway I am going to attempt to repair this myself at the weekend. Anyone got a step-by-stem guide for the procedure. I'm a fairly competent DIY mechanic, and have changed the spring on an A-Class Mercedes and Audi 80 Avant. Any tips or special tools I will require. I've got spring compressors, etc.:D

Cheers in advance.

I've ordered a replacement F/O/S spring and top bearing from Audi but it turns out it's F/N/S. It was dark - I was stressed, enough said. I assume the springs aren't specific for a particular side and are interchangable? Can anyone confirm please.

Planning to fit on Saturday as I can't find a garage to do it until next week.

Just check they are coloured though i think theres a colour marker on the spring

The springs are suitable for both nearside and offside, so no worries on that front.

However, depending on mileage, you should really do both springs and bearings, as the one you are not replacing will be tired and sagged by now and you may find that the camber at the front is shot by just doing the one side!

You've picked the most difficult one of the two to change by the way - the offside needs most of the air intake and brake master cylinder removing just to access the 3 top bolts!

Best of luck and if in any doubt about the part, just quote the chassis number at the Audi dealership to ensure the right one (or the left one!!;)) is delivered.

Cheers,

Mike

PS That's the first 5000!

Hi spartacus
As Skipton pointed out, access to the 3 top strut mounting bolts is the hardest bit. Moving the brake fluid reservoir does help (no need to disconnect the pipes) but its still worth doing a dry run to ensure your range of sockets, adaptors and ring keys etc allows you to get to and slacken these bolts.
The strut top bearing is a bit fiddly to fit into its housing while locating the dust cover so make a careful note of where everything goes when taking it to bits.
The black plastic dome cover on top of the strut is almost impossible to fit from above so fit it to the strut before pushing it up through the strut tower.
Schnelletrecker provided this link from the German forum. It covers fitting Koni FSD's but should help you with the general installation - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2978&d=1236198218

It was the N/S spring, so all I had to do was move the coolant resevoir out of the way. Still took me 4 hours! The bearing was absolutely shot - so good advice to replace that part as part as a matter of course.

Everything was probably original parts, (69k) so nuts were tight and corroded. I released the lower balljoint and the tie-rod for better access. Can't afford to both at the same time - but I take your point about changing in pairs. Incidentally - the car was still under an Approved Audi warranty until earlier this year. I'll bet if the spring had broken then - they would simply have replaced the one side.

Glad it's finished. Going to celebrate with a cool beer. Cheers for all the help guys - great site.:)

I have two springs spare, if it helps. They are from an FSI, which I always thought was a lot lighter than the TDi, but reading the 1.4 vs 1.6 thread, it looks like there might only be a few kg in it!!!

Anyhow, do your research and if they are suitable then give me a shout.

Ta.
