I'm afraid to say it but I am slowly losing the battle to keep my A2 [29].
It's fast becoming a reality that my pride and joy will be traded in for a Vauxhall Zafira 2.0D Elegance as that is my wife's transport of choice. Well actually the Volkswagen Touran is first choice but my budget won't stretch that far unfortunately.

I visited a Vauxhall dealer the other day who offered me £7,000 for it as opposed to a private sale price of ~£8,250 but also said they could knock down the price of an ex-demo Zafira and throw in rear parking sensors (value £300).

I think it will be another month or so before I make a final decision but in all likelyhood I will be inheriting my wife's year old 1.4 T-Spirit Corolla and she'll be getting a shiny nearly new MPV... :(

Go Corolla, Go Corolla!

Sorry to hear about possible loss of A2. Have you checked Honest Johns website for deals on the Touran? Or is it really way out of budget?

Steve - 2002 1.4SE petrol, Silver, black/black interior, Then an identical replacement 2003 A2. Now a Toyota Corolla 1.6 T-Spirit

If we went for the Touran it would have to be a 2.0 TDi Sport, but used versions of this are very expensive and way out of budget. We can afford a 1.6 FSI S model which has a much lesser spec and a not so economical engine (compared to the diesel). This is why we're tempted to spend the same amount of money and get a nearly new top spec Zafira.

Don't forget to factor in the resale value. You may pay more initially but you'll probably get more back at the end.

Also worth having a look at www.drivethedeal.com to see what discounts levels are available. When I bought a Corsa last year I was shocked by how much you could get off the list price.

Grrr... that is awful news!!! And especially as that Zafira is soon to be replaced and really of an ancient design... inside and out. Did either of you actually see the dashboard? Or looked at the quality of the plastic making the mirror adjust switch? To name but two things... But alas money is talking. If not we'd all be driving Ferraris... All I can say of a Zafira is that the seats are clever. The rest is decidedly creaky and old... Good luck Stuart. Why not get a Scenic? Far cleverer and a really modern nice design. Also cheaper than a Touran...

Stuart: How about a nice dealer demo SEAT Altea? Brand new design (thus safer in a crash) ir looks sporty and not as much a fertility symbol as the Zafira... and it will be as (or nearly) as exclusive as the A2. I had a everyone-has-one car before the A2 and I think you know how nice it is to have something cool and fairly distinctive! Get an Altea!!!

I agree with the 'not common car' but since I sold mine there has been an explosion of A2 in the North Yorkshire area. There are regularly three or four in the supermarket car park - no Tesco this far out!

My father has a Zafira and I got a Touran as a loaner last week. I must say that the Touran is a nice car, smooth interior, lots of storage space.
But when you keep in mind that it is way more expensive then the Zafira I can surely understand why you would choose the Zafira. The seating is the same, altough in the Zafira the position is somewhat more upright.
All in all the only nice thing in the Touran is the option to NOT have the third row in the back.

Stuart_D,
Go for an Altea... event the 1.9 TDI should be a nice replacement.
And then we could start the www.alteaforum.net! :) LOL
Cheers,
A2day

[37]Zafira GSI gets really good write-ups so the base model has the appropriate geometry. Go for it!

Having tested 5 twin prams in the boot of my wife's Corolla we discovered that not one of them would fit! So had a fun day yesterday and went on two test drives - the Zafira and Scenic. Both the dealers wound us up though!

Firstly Vauxhall questioned why we had come despite us making an appointment with the man that was there - he denied we'd even phoned him. Yet took us out on a pathetically short drive. The car was nice but my wife found the gear knob too short although she probably could have adjusted her seat to find a better position. Nippy car and quiet to drive, but quite dated.

Then we went to Renault. The dealer started off ok but over time irritated us! First of all he refused to give us an idea as to how much my car was worth - when we were at Vauxhall they made some calls there and then and found out. Then he said that we were going on a test drive in the car I had shown interest in, he spent an hour plugging it and then said that he didn't even know if it was for sale and if it was for sale, couldn't say how much it was and that they had no other used Scenics in stock. The car itself was very nice, quiet and smooth. However there were some niggling little quality issues that bugged my wife as she sat in the back for half of the test drive and also the gear change was a little rubbery. When we got home, we talked ourselves out of it!

I started looking at the Touran again and found a 10 month old 1.6 FSI SE Touran at a dealer close to my work. Went there at lunchtime and am going for a test drive after work today. It does seem to be the best value MPV I have come across plus is a VW as a bonus, so assuming I like the drive and colour (Maui Blue - see below), then it is likely that I will purchase it this week and then it will officially be bye bye A2 [29]

I hope the deal works in the touran's favour! It is a far FAR better car... but alas not an A2!

I'm afraid that the Touran has won! The test drive was great. The engine wasn't the quietest but was nippy and very smooth and the six speed box will be useful. For £12k, I'm getting a 10 month old Maui Blue 1.6 FSI SE Touran, with 7,000 miles, with 5 individual seats, huge boot, air con, CD player, CD Changer, cooled glovebox, electric windows, electric mirrors, cruise control, six speed gear box, over two years warranty left, computer, 39 compartments, over 100 seating positions etc!!

I will have my A2 for the rest of this week and then giving it to them on Saturday or maybe Monday in exchange for the new car (below). I will then be taking over my wife's Corolla (until I have enough money to buy an A3 Sportsback!) and she'll be using the Touran.
