hey my car is telling me now that i need a service? i only got it serviced about 6k miles ago? maybe the mechanic never reset the computer? can i reset it myself or do i need to bring it back or can i just ignore it?

Mechanic possible did not know/forgot to reset service info, are you on longlife service?Yes you can reset service info, details in your handbook..

Press and hold the Service Interval and Trip counter reset pegs at the bottom of the instrument cluster, and whilst holding down turn the ignition on.
This will reset the Service Reminder thingy but I believe it also switches it from the variable servicing to the the fixed interval servicing cycle i.e.every 12000miles.
I did this with mine and it now reads 9800miles to next service.

Hi guys,

Thanks a mil for that info. I did what Herusix suggested this morning and it seemed to have worked.I don't think it says anything now though when i turn on the ignition? well it goes straight to "OK". Hope i haven't wrecked it

Thanks for that ULP .......GULP:eek:
There is obviously more to setting this service button than meets the eye.

I agree if the car indicates that a service is due then it should be done unless its glaringly wrong. A service interval will vary depending on how its driven and for how long at high speed etc. My advice to anyone is if its due for service and you are not sure seek advice from the dealershp. Warranties are only valid if the car is serviced correctly

The Reason for resetting mine myself as it is now well out of the warranty period I am doing the basic service myself, and checking for any faults with my own copy of VAG-COM and lead.
More indepth services and other work will be entrusted to a AUDI specialist.
Also in my case the car is mainly used for short journeys,so it is better to service it on a more regular basis(ie.12months) than on the variable schedule(ie upto 24months or 30000miles)

well i had my timing belt done and a full service about 6k miles ago so the mechanic obviously forgot to change the service interval on it. i could see it counting down until it told me to service it. there is one other thing though that you guys might be able to help me with... the oil dip stick! i find it very hard to tell what the oil levels are as the stick doesn't show a definate line of oil and i keep wondering if the oil on the stick was just collected on the way up?

Oil levels on the dip stick is an old chestnut. I have given up trying to read the dip stick. I rely on the oil level light coming on. I do check it sometimes but get a different reading every time grrrrrrr dont think it will ever be resolved

When on the variable servicing, what are the main factors in how the length of the period is determined?

I.e. Does most of the driving need to be motorway to get the longest intervals?

My A2 was stating 15,500 miles until next service when I collected it at the weekend.. now we're almost down to 13,000 and I've only driven it for 3 days.. 1 being on the motorway for 2 hours; the others my commute to work (twisty a-roads with partial bits of stop start through towns. I've just clocked up 300 miles so far.. My MPG is reading an average of 50mpg whilst average speed is about 40mph. Any clues?

Thanks,

Ian

Good point regarding the oil levels, its a poor design, why don't they mould a white band within the stick at this point so it is easier to read:confused: or is it more a problem with extracting the stick without spoiling the reading.
I would send a letter to Audi pointing this out but probably a little late since they discontinued this model:( .........perhaps a letter anyway so the future design does not suffer this problem;)

I never have a problem checking the oil level on my 2001 tdi. I only check it after it has been standing on level ground (in the garage) for a few hours (usually overnight) - Pull out dipstick and wipe it with a piece of kitchen roll. Push the stick back in making sure it is fully home then remove it immediately. Check the level on the back of the stick (not the cross hatched side) under a good light.

Cheers Spike

My experience is that the ground must be absolutely level or the dipstick oil level reading will be screwed up.
