audi want lots of money for their spacesaver spare. i have the gunk type repair system but need a spare for the wife to change easily. will any of the VW type space savers fit the audi? her car has the standard 5 stud 16" alloys and ebay are advertising VW spares for £15 and seem to cover their full range of cars eg golf polo and the different marks.

Hi all I found this post and would like to re-raise it as I have just been outbidded last night on an A2 spacesaver that went for £175!!,
I am getting very desparare for one as we are going on a family holiday to france next month and I dont have a spare.
Will a spacesaver from anything else fit??.
Or does anyone know of a breakers that are breaking an A2 that might have one??.
There is one on ebay at the moment but the seller wants a lot for it as he saw what the last one went for,
cant really afford what Ipswich audi quoted me yesturday for one- £222.85 not including the bracket and I didnt dare ask how much that was!!.
Can anyone help,I'm getting worried.

Regards Andy.

hi andyman
i think i was the first to bid for the a2 spacesaver on ebay last week with £25and i feel that's all its worth. once again audi are pulling in silly money for their parts, from whatever quarter.
i am going to research further the vw spacesaver option at my local independent vw garage where repairs to the wife's a2 cost less than half compared to the audi (am trying to think of a suitable acroynm for AUDI; eg All Users Disable Individuals) garage. will let you know what i find after i get back from quick work trip to barcelona

Just buy a spare 15 inch alloy off ebay of from a breakers - nobody seems to want these.

I paid £3.20 for mine on ebay with a near new tyre on it!!!!!! Yes Three Pounds and 20 pence. (Cost me £7 to get it collected though).

spare wheel

bloody good idea mjs, will also check that option out when i get back from sunny barcelona
ps is there still a free bit for fly fishing near the bridge in barny
dicko:)

hi guys thankyou for the advice(anyone else got any too?),

MJS would it be leagal to use a 15" as the rolling diameter thing would be wrong surely??.
I have often though that one of those wheels from the basic A2 (the ones with lots of spokes) would be more availible.

Andy, I wouldn't worry too much about not having a spare, I've been to the Vendee and Jersey and Italy without a spare in my A2 sport, in fact I can't remember getting a puncture in the 3 years I had it, a simple nail in tyre job will be sorted by the gunk stuff, the only time it won't work is if you have a hole in the tyre, I know the gunk says it will cope with up to 6mm sized puncture, but I don't really believe a tin of goo could cope with that.

There is a specialist applied solution that is put into tyres which will seal punctures without you knoeing about them, that would give you peace of mind at least.

Come to think of it if your puncture exceeds the goo's capabilities would you really want to drive the car without having it checked over first.
Cheers

I understand what you mean mate but if it were a bad blow out(and sods law it would be!)then we would be knackered.
Also this is for the wifes peace of mind and I have to make her happy(if thats possible).
So if I cant get a proper spacesaver then its got to be one of these A2 alloys,
Anyone know if they work and are legal please?.

It would appear by the tyre shaped box that arrived this morning that I am the proud owner of the £175 Ebay tyre.
I was pleased with not going over the maximum that I would pay, that didn't last long!
I lost interest after £150 but Mrs Glock bid on in order to buy it for my birthday in 2 weeks time.
I wouldn't mind but I had £200 in my Paypal account after selling a camera and stereo and she used that money to pay for it!

I suppose it's the thought that counts!

Trip to the stealer next week for a bracket then.
Andyman, I would keep an eye on the other one as it's unlikely to go for as much as this one did, not least because Mrs G won't be bidding.

Cheers

I bought a spacesaver from eBay at £40 for an Audi TT. It is a perfect fit for my 17" Sport wheels. The tyre is a 3.5" Continental. Any 4 cylinder TT will do for as source (the V6 engined cars have a pump/sealant & no spare).

I wouldnt bit to that much mate, its only £50 less than the dealer for a new one!!.
I only bid to £170 cos the wife wanted me too.
I emailed the bloke about that other one and he said that I should give him an offer which I did but he didnt reply to my £150 offer!!??.
Glad really bit expensive.

Mlarner is this really correct??,
Ours is a Sport with the standard 17 " alloy, do you say that the TT spacesaver would fit fine??.

Well I have found a breaker who has a few TT spacesavers and he wants £40 for one which is very good so can anyone be certain??- Skipton??. PRETTY PLEASE??

Hi Guys,

I have a TT spacesaver in mine; Fits under the floor, fits on the hub- does all that is required... and cost a fiver. Golf spares will always be cheaper than TT parts, so try looking there! A space-saver is only ever a "Get-you-home" so if it fits, it it will do!

However, a full-size spare with a matching overall diameter is a FAR better choice for "touring" use (even if it is a different wheel size). call it a "space-saver", and (assuming you have a punctured original in the car!) no police-person could possibly have a problem with its' use!

If you follow the advice above, and fit the spare on the rear, the width, tyre brand, and wheel diameter are fairly irrelevant in the short term, but a wrong overall radius MIGHT upset your ABS?

The speed/distance restrictions on a conventional spacesaver would be a major problem on a touring holiday, and since a full-size wheel and tyre are cheaper....Why bother?

Some good points there, thankyou.
This chap who has the TT spacesavers seems helpful enough so if the answers he gives me tomorrow are OK then I shall get one from him.
Then all I will need to do at some point is source the false boot floor and brackets.

I bought the bracket, replacement bolts to hold it in place, and the threaded hold down piece (with the plastic knob on top).

They were:
Bracket
8Z0 801 645 B
£15.59 + VAT
Bolts
N10049308 x 2
£0.78
N90448801 x 2
£0.28
"Knob" with screwed thread
8Z0 803 899
£4.13
All + VAT - (Stealer prices, hadn't discovered VAGParts then!)

Two of the bolts hold the bracket and battery in place. The other two locate the front of the bracket to the boot floor. These need to screw into captive nuts, I think. My car had indentations here, but no nuts. The bracket is pretty secure all the same, but I need to see if I could fit nuts for a complete job.

(btw, I bought a TT spacesaver, with the plastic disc attached which appears just to protect the boot floor from indentations).

Alan you have a PM.

I had no luck today with the breakers they only had an 18" tT spacesaver and an A4's 16" space saver.
They were helpful but said I would need to tell them exactly what size wheel and tyre I would need and from which models???.
Also bearing in mind that the spacesaver i get would need to be able to fit on its bracket under the false boot floor.

Can anyone help pls.
