Speed Sensor Wire

It has to be on one of the pins of the radio connectors, because the GALA feature of the Audi head units is controlled by it, but I can´t remmeber which one..:-(

Bye, Frido.

The gala feature never did work on either of my A2's.....the dealer never knew why......

Steve - 2002 1.4SE petrol, Silver, black/black interior, Then an identical replacement 2003 A2. Now a Toyota Corolla 1.6 T-Spirit

Gala - automatically adjusts the music volume for the ambient noise in the car.
Frido, are you sure this is done off speed and not a small microphone in the radio?

Don't drink drive! Not only is it socially unaceptable, it also harms A2's.
Was a 1.4SE petrol. http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/uk14.htm http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/safety.htm
New A2 on order. Only a month to go now - Ebony Black, Red Leather, CC, Symphony + all the previous options we had.

Rob: It is done off the speed sensor because that´s the wire I´d have to cut to disable the "no-picture-above-7kph"-feature of the TV/Nav-Unit, but the wiring is the same on all A2´s....whether with Navigation unit or not.

Bye, frido.

I agree the wiring is probably there for all styles of A2 stereo - but I'm still not sure if it would be utilised on a Concert/Symphony headunit. Speed would seem a very crude way of adjusting the stereo for internal noise.

In either case Stuart, you should find the required cable in the stereo wiring loom - just don't know which colour it would be.

I also thought the speed sensitive setting on my radio never worked - even though I have it set to a max level of 5. BUT after renting a few cars without this feature I can tell you it does work. It just works ever so subtly that you don't know it is working. I never really have to adjust the sound level in the A2 unless you really want it loader. But once I've set it, I never touch it again. In the rental cars I had to up the volume in all of them once I reached a motorway...

About the color of the wire: if you have regular ISO connectors behind the radio, then the speed sensor wire should be in the same block as the power connections. Moreover, it should be the first pin.

A1 = grey? = Speed sensor
A2 = ?
A3 = ?
A4 = orange or yellow, permanent 12V in
A5 = blue, accessory 12V OUT (for antenna/sub)
A6 = yellow/black: lights on/off
A7 = red: switched 12 V in
A8 = black or brown: ground/earth

Hope that helps.
I still have to figure out A4 and A7, since Audi appears to do those differently (read that on a German forum). In my case that means that my headunit stays on forever, even when I remove the keys.

Thanks Edo, very helpful!

Probably a silly question, but what's the best way of testing/confirming that it's A1? If I use a voltmeter, presumably it would emit a varied output depending on the speed?

Stuart, you're assuming that I'm very knowledgable in this area, but most of the time I'm just relaying info I found out elsewhere or which I've seen for myself ;)

So I don't know what signal is put on A1. I do trust it to be A1, but I guess it's up to the 'receiving end' to interpret the signal.

My (Dutch) source was http://www.12vhifi.nl/isoconnectors.html and it starts by showing the standard connector.
A1 is 'telephone mute/rpm pulse' in that.
Then, at the bottom, it says that for VAG cars A1 is the 'speed dependent volume control'. So a slight change of terminology there.

Technically speaking, I think the standard 'pulse' type signal is a more sensible way than a variable voltage. Measuring a pulse with a voltmeter seems difficult to me though.
So you're on your own again.

Just don't go testing it by yourself. You might end up in the bushes...!
