Spidan Springs on a TDI with FSDs

List of Spidan Springs

For the benefit of all, here are the Spidan springs available, including their tech specs...

49527: Front spring for the 1.4 petrol without OpenSky. .............................Thickness: 11.15mm, Length: 342mm, Diameter: 139mm, Weight: 1.55kg
56831: Front spring for the 1.4 petrol with OpenSky. .................................Thickness: 11.10mm, Length: 337mm, Diameter: 138mm, Weight: 1.541kg
49515: Front spring for the 1.4 TDI and 1.6 FSI with and without OpenSky. ...Thickness: 11.50mm, Length: 338mm, Diameter: 137mm, Weight: 1.7kg
49546: Rear spring for all A2s. ..............................................................Thickness: 09.75mm, Length: 338mm, Diameter: 107mm, Weight: 1.3kg

There is also a rear spring (56833) supposedly for cars with OpenSky, but this results in a back end noticeably higher than SE.

The specifications for 56831 (Petrol with OpenSky) confuse me a little. They appear to be 5mm shorter and slightly lighter than the 49527 springs (Petrol without OpenSky), which considering they're designed for the extra weight of the OpenSky system is a little counterintuitive.

Note that, at the time of writing, I only have experience of the 49527 springs for my specific application. The general consensus on the German forum is that all Spidan springs offer increased comfort over their direct Audi counterparts.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks Tom

I'm quite interested in the springs. My Eibachs are a lot of fun but it is harsh over high frequency bumps with the FSDs giving less damping. I'm either changing the FSDs or the Eibachs. My other problem with the Eibachs is that I'm 335mm at the front and 340mm at the rear (what's this FSD lifting effect, eh? ;p ). I'm already on 195/50/16 and my trolley jack doesn't go under the front jack point where as it does (just) under the rear. So I might be interested in the springs but as you pointed out, the two petrol front springs doesn't make sense from the specification point of view!

Best guess is the petrol front spring has more coils (hence increased weight) which gives a softer spring rate. The extra length would provide some preload to maintain the static ride height

Humps,

I was under the impression that only the FSDs for the TDI/FSI caused the 15mm lift. I thought the petrol variant didn't present this complication, though I could be wrong.
There's no measurement of stiffness within the tech specs, so we don't quite have the full picture, which introduces a bit of guess-work. A guy on the German forum fitted a set of Sachs springs equivalent to Spidan 56831 (petrol with OpenSky) to his TDI and found that his car sat at roughly the same height as mine, despite the spring's shorter length. I'd suggest those springs are stiffer.

I'm about to order a set of 4 springs for a forum member, so if anyone wishes to add to the order and save on postage, speak soon!

Cheers,

Tom

I'm intrigued, then, as to why mine sits so low at the back. Even without the seats in and the trim stripped, I'm still only at 315mm...

Tom,

How much would a set of front (49527) and rear (49546) springs be delivered? PM me if you prefer.

Thanks
Rob

PM Sent, R0B.

I plan on placing an order at the end of today (Sunday). If anyone would like to benefit from combined postage, please let me know.

The price of the springs varies a little depending on the precise model, but they average at about €48.00 per spring including postage to me.
Once they've arrived at my house, there'll be a small additional cost in sending them to your address. I'm afriad the distributor will only send them to me.

Cheers,

Tom

i too have a very tight fit with the trolley jack at the front, thats with -30 weitec on fsd's and 195/50x15's (I usually have to jack the rear up first and then the front) . So we are saying the spiden will give a more comfortable ride however i am still a little confused about the ride height. i have OEM SE prongs on the rear (with fsd) however I do not want to end up with the front sitting high. Subject to the answers I may be interested, How would you want paying Tom? Paypal?

Hi Adrian,

With the 49527 that I have, you'll end up with the figures in my original post; the front will sit at 34.6ish. I'm not entirely sure how this compares to the height of the Weitecs, but I believe they should be ca.10mm lower.
Ideally I'd like payment via direct bank transfer. There's no need to feel rushed into a decision as I'm happy to order them whenever you're ready; it's just that postage costs can be reduced by placing your order today.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks tom, my intention is to sort this so i can get them fitted along with new top strut bearings/mounts beginning August. how long is the trurnround from ordering to delivery?

On the one occasion that I've ordered them, they arrived within 3 or 4 days.
They're delivered to my house in Lancaster. I can then forward them to your address (at cost) or you can collect them.

Cheers,

Tom

ok, thanks, gives me a bit of time to get everything lined up for the garage doing the work, its also cambelt and service time so quite a lot to do (and I think Skipton Autos is busy over the summer so am not sure Mike is available to do the servicing).

Thanks for the offer Tom, I may hassle you in the future but I'm not in great hurry at the moment. I also have cambelt service soon. I did have a minor front lifting effect when I installed FSD, it was visible but I did not remember the hub to arch measurement. It has since settled and my FSD is one of the oldest installed on an A2 in the UK.

What I'm interested in is the comfort factor in combination with FSDs. How do you think they compare to standard SE springs with FSD?

Bret, 315 at the back is some 25mm lower than mine! That's got to be wrong somehow? Some heavy road kill stuck inside the bumper? ;-)

I have tried both and find the Spidan springs noticeably more comfortable, but I've got a TDI sat on petrol springs, so my use of the them is somewhat different than yours would be. Nevertheless, the German forum find them more comfortable than the equivalent Audi springs.

Tom

no, it's bare at the moment and I still see 315. I will re-measure today, it's now been out for several days, so if it's going to re-settle higher, it will have.

- Bret

(no rear carpet, plastic under the boot lid, both side trims, the A, B and C pillar lower trims, rear seats -- all out - some cables to be pulled today)

Interesting.

With my B8's and FK springs Im sitting at 31.5mm at the front and 32.5mm at the back (thats with an empty boot but with seats and trim in place etc)
