Stiff Gear Stick

I have a 2002 A2 , it is a brilliant car. I have one problem, the side ways movement on the gear stick is very stiff. I have had a play with resetting the cables and this has not fixed the problem. The gears change perfectly it is just simply moving from right to left \ left to right in the car, which is moving the selector up and down in the gearbox.

It is as if the two fingered spring on the gear stick lever, that makes it spring back to centre, has lots its strength, or perhaps there is a spring inside the gearbox that has gone.

Anyone else have this problem or suggest how I can fix it?

I had this problem with my ford focus. There was a spring that put the gear stick back to the central position had gone. I would assume that there must be a similar set up on all gear boxes?

Not sure how to fix it. The garage did it when it when it had it's Mot.

Its always worth checking the reverse light switch spring loaded dedent ball is not stuck and doing a gearchange cable alignment check - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13062
