Stiff shifting

Hi,
my 1.4 TDI is really stiff to shift gears on. Anybody with the same experience? Is it common? The shop told me I have to change the cables. Are there no way of lubricating it?

PS
Got the anti rollbar thing fixed together with the 90000 km service. Now it's quiet when going over bumps!

How long have you had your car? I've just had mine for about a month, and have got used to the "stiff" gear change. I think it's normal, and I now don't find it a problem (assuming there is no fault with your car?).

Hey Mats,

I think all A2's/Audi's have a notchy like shift (so I've been told as I've only driven my Audi/A2), however you can adjust the gear shift linkages http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7027. I adjusted mine and its much smoother, but still occasionally stiff coming out of reverse.

I'm getting 4 wheel alignment at Stealth Racing (http://www.stealthracing.co.uk/) next week, and they are going to have a look at the gear shift linkages as well. I'll let you know if they improve it much more.

:)

Hi Keithb

Will be interested to see how you get on. I don't drive ours too often and the gears are getting much stiffer esp 2nd & 4th. Also need 4 wheel alignment check after ARB change.

Cheers

I have had this problem. I took it to Audi who do have a lubricant, and will try that first. In my case that failed, so the linkages were all replaced and minor adjustments made. Since then the gear change has been perfectly smooth. It cost over £1k to do, but I was in warranty.

This was one of the items I commented upon when i test drove my A2 before buying. I dont know what the dealer did but it did seem better when i collected the car. It is ok but not as good as an A3 or my old A6.

Thanks for your attention! I think I'll try the cable adjustment routine once the climate gets a bit softer here in Sweden.
