Strange knocking noise - over bumps

Hi, this is my first post so be gentle, I've noticed a knocking sound from my A2 1.4 2002 every time I go over a bumps/pot holes. It sounds like it's coming from the left and right front wheels. I've checked the tyres and they seem to be ok. Any suggestions as to what could be causing this noise.

Have a quick search through the forums for anti-roll bar, or FARB. Its a common issue, with symptoms not unlike yours.

The 'D' bushes on the anti-roll bar need replacing. Cheap parts and easy to do if you can get the front end on a ramp or similar.

mind the bush sizing!

I did this a few months back, and despite having told Audi Hatfield the diameter of the roll bar they still got me the wrong ones - there are two different roll bar diameters, I don't remember the dims .. someone else here will be more knowledgeblae

Hi there. I had this last year, the cause was the plastic coating that had come away from the anti roll bar where the bushes sit. The cure was to buy the modified anti roll bar (£50/60) and modified bushes (£2/3) from my local Audi dealer. The diameter of the modified anti roll bar is smaller (it has no plastic coating), therefore the hole in the bushes is smaller, so quote your vin number to the service department and they should be able to see if you have the modified anti roll bar or not. I had mine fitted by a specialist to keep costs down.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

If it's only when the wheel is not loaded, it's not necessarily the ARB, it's probably the droplinks. You can replace those yourself. Try it with a row of potholes under the left wheel and turning right. Cobbles are really good for this.
If it's mainly when both wheels get pushed back at the same time, then it's probably the bushes. You can also do that yourself. You don't have to to replace the complete bar; the new bushes are rubber where the old ones were plastic. However, if you do replace these, you ought to do the droplinks at the same time, to stop premature wear of the older part.

You can check either: remove the front wheel and try rocking the droplink, You should also be able to see the plastic bushes on the ARB, and normally the cracks are visible. There's a recent thread on this: http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7438

EDIT: the ARB diameters are 16 and 19mm. IIRC: the smaller one was until 2002, i think.

Don't use lubricants when you put the new bushes on, or they might pop out of place later.. Buy the smaller bushes.

You should also install the new bushes with the bumpers and anti-roll bar in "normal" position, otherwise the bushes will be slightly twisted and they will have a shorter lifetime.
