Suspension mods and insurance companies

A2OC Donor
Morning all,

I am considering lowering my MX-5, yes I know this isn't the MX-5 OC , but you guys are certainly more knowledgable when considering non chav mods. The Mazda dealer will fit the kit (it is an dealer fit optional extra for the car).
So when some of you have changed your A2's to Weitec springs and koni FSD's did you tell the insurance company?? The mod I'm doing is to improve ride and handling, by lowering ~3cm. So it isn't a "drag it along the floor mod", and in essence is to get the same result as the Weitec/Koni combo.

I realise this isn't the correct forum, but I have an awful lot of faith and trust in what you guys have told me in the past, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Although I havn't got round to fitting fsd's on my A2, I have always told my insurance of any mod on previous cars.
Insurance companys can be awkward re fitted extras, as its a dealer option shouldn't make any difference.

I believe the rule of thumb is that if anything on your car isn't standard spec. then you should tell your insurance company, as they assume it is standard unless you tell them otherwise.

So that includes factory fitted options, eg bigger wheels. And certainly includes any suspension mods, no matter who does them. However I think that if an option was fitted in the factory, you could easily claim that you did not realise. Lowering springs would be a little harder to explain away...

Thanks for the advice, I thought I would update you on some interesting progress.

Firstly, the lowering of my suspension was deemed a "performance" modification by my current insurance company and they refused to offer cover if I did the mod. Slight panic ensued, until I consulted the MX-5 OC and they recommended an insurance broker in Milton Keynes. He sorted me out with a brilliant quote, which was cheaper, better cover and allows any mods as long as I inform them. :D:D

If any of you are interested, the company are called A-Plan Insurance Group, I spoke to a guy called Steve Marsh, who was superb. Their phone number is 01908 271771. They specialise in performance cars, non-standard models and imports. They don't advertise much, as they rely on word of mouth. But I will be going back to them for a quote for the A2 in September.

Highly recommended broker, and thanks again guys for the advice.

Dave
