The A2 saga continues

Whilst taking my car to the garage to look at my problem
with my 1.4SE jumping out of fifth. My car on the journey
started making a horrible grinding noise in the engine.
It was very loud and when I'd made the 40 min journey
to the garage I was livid. Since I got the car in June
the following has happened.

New starter motor
New clutch put in after being recovered off a busy slip road M62.
Driveshaft falls out going round a roundabout, again recovered.
Jumping out of fifth gear on the motorway.
Grinding noise in engine.

Obviously a lot of this stems from what seems like a
incompetent garage. Now after fixing the linkage in the gears
again there problem. They said they adjusted the engine auxillary
belt to stop the noise.

What is the engine auxillary belt?

This is'nt the timing belt, is it?

Anyway the noise has come back nowhere near as loud but it's
there and it's annoying after all the hastle I've had there can't
seem to do anything right.

I mean they seem to be doing more damage to the car than good.

What should I do? People have said I should get it independently
inspected by the AA or something.

Any advice about the auxillary belt is appreciated, is this all causing
damage to the car that I really love?

sorry for the long one.

cheers

Yes get ur breakdown company out and let them hear the noise tell them that the garage havent been able to correctly repair it an youd like there opinion. If who a 90ps tdi it could be the dual mass fly wheel. the noise will be the bits rolling around

Thanks for the reply alex.

It's a 1.4 SE petrol by the way.

Am I alright driving with this noise? I'm still lost on what the engine auxiliary belt is.
I've actually been advised to get a full inspection of the car by the RAC or whoever,
it's steep at 250 quid though.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

thanks

Hi Darren
The auxiliary belt drives the alternator and air con compressor (assuming you have climate control) If the noise is related to this belt then the problem could be with the alternator or even the bearings in the belt tensoner pulley. Sorry it is not possible to judge if its safe to drive the car from your description of the problem.

Rather than spend £250 with the RAC, I would be tempted to take it to an Audi dealer and ask for a written estimate to fix everything. They may charge but its likely to be a more detailed report and probably a lot less expensive.
A chat with your local trading standards officer or the citizens advice bureau may be worthwhile if you think the garage is incpable of fixing your car to an acceptable standard.

Q. did resetting the gear linkage cables cure the jumping out of 5th gear' problem.

Cheers Spike

Thanks spike,

Yeah I have climate control, I have just been
paranoid that it's the timing belt and it going to
damage the engine or something.

I must admit that apart from the noise creeping
up, the car feels better now than it ever has.
It drives a lot smoother and it has'nt popped out
of gear yet.

I am going to look into getting it checked by an audi
dealer I think. I'm pretty easy going and have avoided
the trading standards route but if I have to I will.
I just want the car to be fixed properly and in a good
working order as the warranty runs out in about 6 months.

Again thanks for the replies and advice I really appreciate
it.
