The definitive tyre / wheel size thread

Going over speed bumps for the rear and turning on full steering lock for the front is the test 👍

No issues on that one neither.

Today we were 3 grown males in the car including 70kg baggage in the trunk. No issues.

Sorry I didn't get your post right. In my point of view mose usefull would be to mention sizes used on A2 (or at least highlight them) instead of copy-pasting the "whole" table. But that's my point of view ;)

Here's some possible non-standard 13" tyre sizes for the 1.2TDI. VW Polo MK3 rims include 4.5Jx13 ET35 4/100 and 5.5Jx13 ET43 4/100.

13" tyres
155/80R13 4.0-4.5-5.0
165/80R13 4.0-4.5-5.5
175/70R13 4.5-5.0-6.0
185/70R13 4.5-5.5-6.0

145/80R14 tyres fitted to 4.5Jx14 ET38 4/100 rims is standard on the 1.2TDI.

My post was about non-standard 13" tyres.

The 1.2TDI uses 239x18mm front disc brakes carried over from the VW Polo MK3, so 13" rims will clear the front brake calipers.

Many 1.2TDI owners like the economy of their skinny 145/80R14 tyres and feel that they suit the car well (light and nimble handling, etc.). However, 145/80R14 is a rare and expensive size. Currently mytyres are only listing a Bridgestone B381 in this size. No all-season or winter tyres are listed on mytyres in this size.

Bridgestone B381 145/80R14 76T (Euro label C C 70dB)

In the cold winter months, this might not be a good option where a winter rated tyre with the 3PMSF symbol, such as the Vredestein Quatrac 5, could provide significantly more grip. Hence, my suggestion for 155/80R13 as a possible alternative.

155/80R13 used to be a very popular tyre size. The VW Polo MK4 (and similar versions of the Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia) uses this size in the base 1.2 litre petrol 54HP model without power steering, in combination with 239x18mm front disc brakes and 200x40mm rear drum brakes. So the front brakes are the same size as the 1.2TDI, but the 1.2TDI uses smaller 180x30mm rear drum brakes. However, I doubt the base VW Polo MK4 1.2 petrol 54HP model without power steering was ever sold in the UK.

Here is a comparison of the outside diameters between the two tyre sizes. I've listed the 145/80R14 in both new condition and used condition with 4.7mm of tread wear to show that the outside diameter of 155/80R13 isn't much smaller. Notice that after just 4.7mm of tread wear, a used 145/80R14 will have exactly the same outside diameter as a new 155/80R13 tyre.

Outside diameter of tyres
145/80R14 587.6mm (new tyre)
145/80R14 578.2mm (used tyre, with 4.7mm of tread wear)
155/80R13 578.2mm (new tyre)

For those long hot summer days, the 155/80R13 is also available in a range of summer tyres, including the eco focused Continental EcoContact 6.

Continental EcoContact 6 155/80R13 79T (Euro label C B 70dB)

One surprise about the 13" steel rims is their weight. At about 5.5kg for each rim, the 4.5Jx13 ET35 4/100 steel rims (from the VW Polo MK3) are even lighter than the very light 6Jx15 ET38 5/100 Pepperpots (from the Audi A3), although probably not as light as the original 4.5Jx14 ET38 4/100 1.2TDI rims.

Looks like someone put 195/65R15

Outside diameter of tyres (percentage increase in outside diameter compared to 175/60R15)
175/60R15 591.0mm
195/55R15 595.5mm (+0.8%)
185/60R15 603.0mm (+2.0%)
205/55R15 606.5mm (+2.6%)
195/60R15 615.0mm (+4.1%)
185/65R15 621.5mm (+5.2%)
195/65R15 634.5mm (+7.4%)

A 7.4% increase in outside diameter will make the speedometer under read.

Considering that 15,16 and 17” wheels were fitted from the factory, will either the 16” space saver wheel, or the A2 collapsible emergency wheel be acceptable for all sizes of wheel on the other side of the car?
I appreciate the raison d’être that they are emergency “get you to the nearest safe facility” wheels, but I am interested as the idea of very old gloop seems like a poor one to me.

There wasn't an A2 specific 16" space saver spare wheel for the A2 so without knowing the specs and tyre size fitted to it it's impossible to say but yes, regarding the collapsible A2 space-saving spare wheel it is suitable to be used with all standard sized 15", 16" and 17" A2 wheel sizes as long as they are wearing standard A2 sized tyres ie 175/60/15, 185/50/16 or 205/40/17 as they are all a similar overall rolling circumference due to the progressively smaller profiled tyre size, the larger the wheel 👍

It can be useful in understanding tyre sizes to form them into groups.

Here are thirty tyre sizes formed into ten groups with three tyre sizes in each group. The tyre sizes in each group are all interchangeable with each other, because all three tyre sizes in each group have similar outside diameters and similar load indexes.

The VW Golf MK3 used all three tyre sizes in group 1.

The Audi A2 would have used all three tyre sizes in group 3 if the 165/70R14 tyre size had also been used. However, the 175/60R15 provides considerably more grip than the rather narrow and high sidewalled 165/70R14 so Audi probably made the right decision in omitting this size from the lineup.

Quick question - does anyone know offhand what the A3 pepperpot 15" rim width is? Guessing it is either a 5J, 5.5J or 6J?
Presumably the standard 6 spoke 16" is a 6J?
Thanks
