The Green A2...

We all want to be green or seen to be green. Most of us have cars though and these can never really be seen as green… Though personally I think one true green car is better than one supposedly green London bus. But then there are 50 people in said bus so it has to be greener in the grand scheme of things…

A new scheme has now been launched here to show drivers (or buyers) of new cars how green their vehicles are.

Go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4252359.stm to see the labelling.

I’m glad to say that with the A2's C02 rating of 116g/km it is as green as Toyota’s petrol electric hybrid. But as many of the people commented on the BBC article linked above, electric energy as used in these A-type vehicles are not really green as the C02 emissions are just moved to the point where the electricity is generated. Ho-hum. Great thinking guys.

Diesel is also greener than petrol (see http://www.stealthtdi.com/Emissions.html) and the entire car is made of aluminium which is also greener and more recyclable than steel. So even though it goes very un-green and fast, is compascious and has seating for four and no compromises (like power sockets in the street!) it is as green as you get! I’m well chuffed with my A2 for making me GREEN!

So if they rate them just on CO2 emissions why is diesel taxed so much more than petrol - can't make their minds up now!

1.4 Petrol Special Edition, Ebony Black, grey leather, heated seats, climate, opensky, five spoke alloys for SWMBO (Replaced a 2002 1.4 Petrol SE) Honda Accord Tourer 2.2 iCDTi for me.

The diesel tax rate is less if it complies with Euro IV emission rules: ie the particulates needs to be lessened. The 90bhp A2 meets these rules I think.

Johann

I meant the tax on pump price, not road tax!

The other anomaly is that the petrol A2 is about the same CO2 emissions as a Diesel Accord Saloon but they don't pay the same road tax even though both are Euro 4 - so much for taxing on emissions.

In this week’s AutoExpress magazine they published the complete list of cars and their CO2 ratings. These are the only THREE cars with a rating lower than the A2 (g/km) and their combined mile to the gallon (MPG) rating in brackets:

Toyota Prius 104 (66)

Daihatsu Charade 1,0 114 (59)

Smart ForTwo Passion 115 (60)

Audi A2 Tdi 116 (64)

The only other A band labeled cars are:

Daihatsu Sirion 1,0 118 (49)

Suzuki Alto 1,1 119 (57)

Renault Magane 1,5 Dci 100 119 (63)

I’m well chuffed!!! Pidly little micro cars with 1,0 litre engines and anaemic performance! Only decent car in there is the Megane and I have driven the 1,5 Dci before and it is EXTRA anaemic - not enough power for such a large car.

For comparison the worst car listed is the £425000 Ferrari Enzo with 545 g/km and an MPG of only 12!!!

Prius a 'pidly little micro car'? I thought it was of decent size and performance for what it is? (Just sticking up for a fellow Toyota!)

LOL... yes I guess you are right... It is a decent sized car and the only one in there apart from the A2. It is however TOO big and in many magazines the cost per mile is equal to running a 2,0 Tdi Golf due to the extremely high initial purchase price... Also how green would those batteries be in 20 years time to recycle? How long will they last? Any mobile phone user knows these things deteriorate after a few years... Would you want a 5 year old Prius? What happens in a fire? Nope. A2 only one for me that is truly green OVER IT'S ENTIRE LIFE FROM BIRTH TO RECYLCING IN 20 YEARS...

(Reason I ask about fire is that a few years ago BMW's then only battery powered car caught fire in Germany... they could not stop the fire and had to dump about 3 tons of sand over the car before the smouldering stopped. No way is batteries safe yet in an accident in my view...)

I've seen the future of green power.

Rubber bands.

I agree wioth Johann, just wait til the scrappies are asked to dispose of a Prius - the bill will run to thousands just to dispose of the batteries - after all we should not put Ni-Cads or the like in the bin becaus of all the heavy metals - just imagine a couple of hundred kilos of it!

Are Prius still heavily subsidised by Toyota?

If it is it is not something they shout from the rooftops. In the US they need these cars to lower their company average MPG. If we had the same sort of rules in the EU Audi would for sure have replaced the A2 in order to ofset the average MPG an RS6/A8 W12 has!

These days it is just cool to be green - same as it is cool to be in F1... so the Prius is probably subsidised, but it comes from the marketing/being-seen-to-be-green budget.
