The shortest variable service?

I've seen lots of us talk about how long we have managed between variable services - 31k miles etc.

What I haven't often seen is a comparison of the lowest distance between services achieved! Our TDI was serviced on the 11th August at 60067. It has now done 61300 and is showing 13200 till next service :( Too many short journeys!

My first variable service on my 1.6 FSI was nearly bang on 18K. Mostly motorway journeys though.

Just had my second VSI at 37460m. First one was at just over 18000m. Daily journey to work is 18m, mainly motorway and dual carriageway with very little traffic.

When I bought my A2 at 2,950 miles, it was showing 6,500 miles to the next service!!! I assume this is because it had been sat on a forecourt. I have now done 7,000 miles in total, and it reckons I have 8,500 to the service, so that is still only 15,500 miles between PDI and service

I was hoping for about 20,000...

When I bought our silver A2 a few months ago, it had done 26500 miles but only 3000 since the last variable service 6 months earlier. The Service Indicator showed only 3400 miles to next service - because it had been sat on the forecourt for a couple of months and many stop/start sequences as it was shuffled around the forecourt. We have now done 28500 miles and the Service Indicator suggests another 7800 miles. Sometimes this car isn't used for two or three days a week. I reckon we'll probably get around 18000 since it was last serviced.

Our other A2 bought at 7900 miles was serviced at 23900 - its first service. This was only because it was 2 years old. The service indicator (if I remember correctly!) still had 2400 miles to go. This car is rarely used on journeys of less than 12 miles but, mainy on rural 'A' and 'B' roads.

I must have the lowest mileage for variable service on my TDi - 3,000 miles when the service light came on for the first service. That was over a year ago. Current mileage is about 4,100 so next service will be due at about 5,000-6,000. No, the car does not do short journeys - it has done 320 miles in one day on several occasions.
PS

Hmm, sort of mileage my 1968 Midget does! But I dont pay £280 every year for that to be serviced...

when I had mine serviced it said 9600 miles until next service was due and that was the day after being serviced. It now says 19600 miles until next service now thats what I call variable service intervals. Seems to go up every week

Could someone advise me please.
Our 1.4petrol 03 had its first longlife service at 11600 by the previous owner. I changed oil/filter at 23700 a yr ago, and the service indicator was zeroed by an independent specialist. It's done 31000 and the service indicator demands another oil/filter change! can this be right. The car does 2 x14m journies/day, 8m of each on motorway with occasional short trips. Is it possible for longlife oil intervals to be shorter than the standard 10,000 m intervals??

It is possible for a longlife service interval to be shorter than the standard one but from the type of journeys you are doing I suspect the specialist actually set the indicator back to standard servicing. This occurs at approx 10,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. Audi provide a good comparison for each servicing regime which may help you select the best option for your driving style - see link

I agree with Spike - sounds like they reset the service indicator manually through the dashboard - as per the user manual. This only resets for fixed interval servicing.

As for our A2

1st AVS 9343 Miles - how crap is that
2nd AVS 38000
3rd AVS 65000

We've had it since new and driving style/journeys have been the same its whole life. Must of really hated something they put in it at the factory?!

Cheers

My first service was done after 2 years - 14500 miles, and the second after another 2 years - 37,000. I'm pretty happy with that!

Same here Simon, I usually run out of time before miles. It was bang on 2 years for each of the first 2 services and I bet it will be the same next time!

I don't do a huge amount of miles either, it's a '52 and I've done just 50k after 5 years, so that makes about 20k between services. Quite happy with that.

Spike, Thanks for that suggestion, I hadnt appreciated the variable service indicator was also applicable to the standard service. Its a year since it was last serviced so Im sure youre right. Illinvestigate it with the guy that did the reset. Thanks again Regards Stan

Hi all after Ollies recent service the service indiator said 9300 and this was a few weeks ago and its still saying 9300, surely this should be reading 20000 or something??

Thanks Andy.

Thanks Andy.

It should do, you're right.

However, some places (even Audi included) 'forget' to reset the service indicator to variable schedules, resulting in the 9300 miles.

Go back to where the work was done and ask them to double check what service schedule was programmed into the car.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Andy,

I am on the variable service myself, but since having the service done the count down mileage has wavered between 9500 and 7000 and is currently at 7600.

I do very short journeys to and from work, (only about 5 miles in total), but I do make up for it with some much longer runs quite frequently - the club socials have helped too. ;)

I was worried at first and had considered reverting to fixed servicing at the next service. Having now watched the mileage fluctuate over the many months since the service, I am now resigned to the fact that I will never see 20k on my readout with my daily commute being so low.

I should still average much more than 12 months with variable servicing, but I am keeping my beady eye on things.

Hope this may put your mind at rest.

Cheers,

Darren
