The shortest variable service?

With regard to resetting the service indicator, because I changed the oil/filter myself when servicing, I asked the agent if he would reset the indicator only, which he offered to do. When I arrived, he said it would cost £89, min charge. On asking another dealer, he said, he couldnt do it, because it would be recorded on the national computer as having been serviced by Audi using genuine parts, which may not have been used ( right!). Are these answers to be expected?

As it gets easier for unscrupulous garages to forge service documents then it would not surprise me if Dealers are linked to Audi HQ when they do an oil change and reset the service indicator. Even if this is not the case, I can understand why they are reluctant to do the reset when they have not done the service.
Personally I am not a great fan of longlife servicing and prefer to change the oil at 10,000 miles or one year whichever happens first. The owners manual shows how to reset the service indicator for this but if you really want to stick with the variable service routine then why not invest in VagCom or similar service tools. You already save a fortune doing the work yourself and one of these diagnostic tools would certainly be an investment.

Thanks darren but my wife drives 12 to 15 miles each way for work each day ,4 sometimes 5 days a weekso it does get a good run so I am hoping to get somewhere near 20000 between services.
Today though when we all went out I checked the sevice indicator and its gone up to 14000 !!, so maybe we are going in the right direction!!??.
Mind you even with 14000 it would still probable be servicing every two years as she only does about 8000 miles a year.

Regards Andy.

Spike,
Thanks for your comments.
Been wondering about the advantages of variable servicing, a facility new to me. Always changed oil/filter annually irrespective of mileage, on previous Polo over 10yrs using no oil between service intervals, whereas our 1.4 petrol does. Is this a charactoristic of this engine, or the oil, or a result of using L/Life? Its expensive oil for what seems a dubious advantage, unless Im missing something here. Regards Stan

OK I'm going to phone the garage tomorrow as I have to book the MOT, and I'm going to tell them about the service indicator but first can someone tell me exactly what the reading should be on a variable right after a service, is it 20000 or more or what please??.
I want to make sure this gets put right, then after the MOT everything will be hunkey dorey!!.

Right after a service, the indicator will read 9300 miles to next service - this will then increase over the nextmonth or so.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks bud but is there not any set/specific amount (ie 20000) that it should go up to then??,
My is currently at 14000 and its been three weeks I think since the service, and I am rather hoping that it will be going up more than that.

The reading will eventually get up to about the 30k mile mark, but ONLY if your driving style and journies allow it.

The fact that it's increased to 14k since the service does indicate that they've set the car to VSI.

Cheers,

Mike
