The value of options when you sell...

The £25000 A2 thread (http://www.a2forum.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1515) made me wonder about what you get back moneywise for optiones come selling time...

It seems a pity that you hardly get any money back for all those nice options you spec when you buy the car... I have nearly £2200 worth of original options on my car. Was that reflected in any guide prices to see what the car is worth? Nope... so a straight loss in my mind. Or am I wrong? They always say it is good to spec AC and silver etc for supposed "resale value"... But do you actually get your money back? I accept I will lose on the BOSE and the DIS for example - they are quite personal choices... and could be seen as useless to some potential buyers. But surely you will get something for the Open Sky and metallic which together cost me £1200!!!

Anybody out there had experience when selling their high spec A2s?

(and BTW I'm not contemplating selling mine at all! ;) - jsut wondering)

Out of interest I asked for a quote to Part-ex my A4 and you are right, the Bose, DIS and CD changer added little, metallic, ECC and wood trim added more so, but at the end of the day, you get little return.

I would imagine that on an A2 that Opensky, metallic paint and SE or above wheels would be better than others, but there again, I'm not a dealer.

The high-spec A2 I´m looking at at the moment was €31500 new and now, 4 months later, is sold for €21500 (with 5000 km´s on the clock), so if I had boght this car new, I´d be pretty disappointed. But that particular car is from Audi´s car pool, the they have to take the hit themselves..:)

Generally it is true that you get little back for options. If you are going to keep the car for a long time, and you will enjoy the options, then you have to look at them as giving value by experience not by getting your money back.

Just proves to me you should buy a car with the highest spec as standard as possible... and can you get this from your friendly German dealer? Any of them, Audi/Merc/BMW or the Swedes? NO An SE Audi has a certain value more than a standard one and you get your money back on this... so why no SXEI version with most options as STANDARD? Hmmm? Because they like to take us for a ride that is... that is why... When I bough my A2 the books said I could expect 53% back after 3 years... BUT what the books don't say is that that is for the BASE car only... so you get fooled into buying a German car because you think your money is "safer" than when you buy a Renault or a Ford... BUT in my opinion my money would have been safer buying a Ford or a Daewoo that is fully specced from the start. Though they only give you back 35% or so after three years, it is based on the price of the ENTIRE car... So not a bad deal then?!

So the lesson: buy German cars sans options and only with metallic paint... OR start to pressure the Germans et al to give is better specced model ranges with more kit as standard...

...and please se this as a rant against all the German/Swedish companies and not just Audi or A2 par se...

I will enjoy my options... BUT I still feel as if I was taken for a ride...

I don't feel like I've been taken for a ride unless I look to sell within the eraly years. I will probably keep my A4 until it falls apart so over the lifetime it will have been worth it. I wouldn't be without my 6CD or ECC in the summer, etc. so it is worth it to me.

I guess I'll be eating my words when I'm looking for a new A2 brimming with goodies before they are phased out and can't get toffee for my 'old' one.

At the moment Im looking at selling my A2 and buying one of the new VW Beatle Cabriolets when they come out in the summer. The only thing that is putting me off is the value of my one year old A2, I dread to think what it's worth now :)

Good luck-I got about £9500 for my 2003 (52) model 1.4 SE petrol, silver metallic with only a handful of miles on the clock in Jan this year.

I sat in a beetle cabrio on Friday - looks great from the outside but doors close with a very tinny rattle rather than a thunk and when I turned to look out of the back all I can see is the folded hood - no rear visibility for reversing at all, and I am over 6ft!!

Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield are silver ? ? ?
