Today I.....

Secondly, a problem with the open sky system where the second tier doesn't open under the steam of the motor that operates it. I know it does open because when the windscreen was changed the chap lifted up the second tier with the glass suction grips. It closed fine but wouldn't reopen, been like this since factory.

Any ideas appreciated

Re the OSS, one common problem is that if the seals are not regularly serviced (i.e. applying the correct grease) the second panel might be just "glued" onto the seals. Assuming nothing else is wrong with your OSS it would be worth trying to open the second panel and clean+grease the rubber seals with the correct lubricant.
This post might add more helpful info:
As others will advise our resident expert on OSS @Kleynie offers a repair service for very reasonable money.
Once your OSS is fixed, bear in mind it is helpful to open it on regular basis whilst cleaning and greasing the tracks and seals twice a year.

amazing what a change of steering wheel can do to interior of our A2’s. Looks fantastic and is on the list of upgrades
Be aware that fitting a more modern steering wheel into the A2 is a minefield of compatibility considerations. I'd rather advise prior to purchase than tell you that you've wasted your money. :)

i would always start a purchase of anything electrical by asking you Tom

So today I

failed to complete the replacement of a CV boot ..

Dispiriting when you fail , but uplifting when you work out why , crimping up the the band to the outer case of the joint was impossible without the right tools , so admit defect , order the right tool and sit back and enjoy the sun .....
I was surprised how easy it wash to remove the drive shaft hub nut , fitting the new boot was a bit harder , I used a genuine Audi part , and it was very stiff , but by god is the grease disgusting!

it was heading for 2 years ago , when I bought this , and nearly 3 years ago when Tom advised me what to get , so from memory, it was a a4 , but the air bag was from a A1 , if you desperately needing the information, I can did out the eBay information, regards Mark

I do currently have a "correct" steering wheel from an A1 going spare... Or waiting for the "ultimate" project … If I ever get around to that.

I've been doing quite a lot of A2 stuff during the lockdown ...apart from actually seeing any A2s other than my own. I've been doing Colour DIS conversions, manufacturing wiring looms, adding new functionality to Gizmo the Magic Box, developing new retrofit options, etc. Basically, lots of preparation for when the lockdown ends. :)

You could maybe do your OWN upgrades...

I finally got my new number plate lights from ECP after over 2 weeks waiting for delivery. I spent the afternoon fitting them. And they were genuine VAG parts part number 8Z0 943 021 if any one is interested and the price was £28.80 for the pair slooooowly delivered. This was in one of their up to 60% end of (every) month sale.

Today I took my 85 year mum in my A2 tdi, to her husband's, my dad's funeral and despite her grief she still said "I really like this car, I can't believe it's 17 years old, please keep it".
I have to thank her for polishing it for the occasion, what a brilliant mum. Dad was pretty good too, sad day but we still enjoyed our memories.
Take care everyone ?

A sad day indeed, perhaps the A2 gave your mum some comfort. Make sure you look after her and take her shopping in it. It is a pity the A2 was never used by undertakers. Know I would like to make my last trip in one.

Thank you, yes the day went well under the circumstances. With the glorious weather it would have been so much better if we could have celebrated his life with more friends and family in his beloved garden.
He was 86 and had a good life and fortunately his illness wasn't too prolonged. We will have a memorial service when we are able to.
In the meantime mum will enjoying shopping trips in the A2 again soon we hope.

Afternoon All,

Been busy today removing more parts from my dead A2 for members who have sent me PMs. If I’ve not replied to you so far please bear with my whilst I get your part removed.

So today I have achieved the following...

Removed the OSS to fit into my new A2. I was advised to not use the OSS in the new A2 as it was not working so as I was about to remove it I tried it anyway. Believe it or not is actually worked. Not perfectly but it’s no a total BSS. I’ll probably do the swap over the next few days though as it doesn’t correctly close/fully lock down, but it works for now.

Also removed the Cruise Control down to the removing the pins from the ECU ready for Tom to fit once he is available and safe to do so.

Whilst I had the headlining off to remove the OSS I also removed the SideGuard including the pins for Tom to do his work, again when safe to do so.

Whilst I had the tools out I thought I’d test the voltage in my heated drivers seat as it’s not worked so far. Passenger seat heats perfectly. When I tested the voltage in the drivers seat I could see there was power going through the green connector so I thought the the heating pad was damaged, a little upset I put the connector back in the seat as guess what, it heated perfectly afterwards. A quick unplug and plug in and I now have both twist seats heating perfectly.

A productive day with big smiles at the end of it.

Stay safe everyone.

Kind regards,

Tom

By coincidence, I also got a bit of movement out of my apparently deceased BSS. With a little light-hand-assistance I got the front section to open, run back and start to open the rear.

It's revealed the two faults I had been warned about: slippage between drive-cables and gear at the front (so I'll try re-riveting) and play between open-close operations of some 3", suggestive of cable drive 'dog' failure. Thanks to Kleynie and Depronman for advice!!

Gives me some confidence to get the thing out of the car and stripped down.

Today, I fitted new calipers refurbished and painted by me. I had previously changed all seals and slider pins. I also fitted new splash guards while I was at it, which were coated in black paint, also done by me. Looks good I think.

I also took the opportunity to fit new brembo pads as they were on offer, and were ridiculously cheap. If anyone wants some barely worn mintex pads, drop me a message.

I treated Spud to some similar pimping, with blue calipers and silver backplates front and rear. Jelly also got treated to new grooved discs and ceramic pads, had them for ages. Then painted calipers metallic red with silver backplates and similar on the rear drums. Well pleased.
