Today I.....

Fixed my fathers A2 no-start issue, thanks to all the info on here.

He has a 2004 TDI 90, recently had a couple of instances where it wouldn't start (not even attempt to turn over). These have be one-offs where if he attempted again it started ok.

2 days ago it wouldn't start at all even with multiple attempts. So I told him to charge the battery, try again and try a different key. He tried that yesterday, still no attempt to turnover. So from the info on here it sounded like a supply or earth issue to the starter - potentially the earth behind passenger headlight.

I used my project A2 to gather the tools necessary, identify the earth lead and starter and called over to his.
  • Visual inspection of battery, battery terminals etc all good.
  • I tried to start it, no immobiliser symbol on dash, keeping the key in the start position and wiggling still no start.
  • Turned lights on and attempted again - lights dimmed.
  • Visual inspection and pull/ wiggle of his earth lead behind the headlight looks really good, but still no start.
  • Attached jump lead to starter motor body and another bold in engine bay that looked to be attached to chassis.
    • This time the car turner over... slowly, improvement so probably the earth lead.
  • Removed earth lead (headlight point only), cleaned it and the attachment point up with wire brush and wet/dry sandpaper then rubbed down with contact cleaner.
  • Reassembled and car started fine on multiple attempts.
Plan to do the starter end of the earth at the next service as well.

Thanks folks for the wealth of info on here - really helped in getting this one up and running quickly.

John

Probably worth installing a second earth while you're there.

I’m not 100% sure on the ability to get the directions into the DIS screen this may beyond the cars ability to integrate the pioneer HU
But getting the multi function buttons to work should be very possible
I have the resistor values for the pioneer external Remote control unit
With these I have done two thinks with mine
1 was to make a left hand side binnacle to control the HU this as volume up and down track up down mode and radio station up down
It works incredibly well
2 was to use the dis stalk to control the volume up down and mute. This as also worked very well but will be removed shortly as I am retro fitting DIS to my A2 and as such I need the stalk to do its intended functions

The pioneer remote is a jack plug on one end like an audio pair of head phones from the three contacts a switch with a resistor value is wired up. This then controls various functions depending on resistor value
There are about 12 functions but I settled on the important ones and designed the binnacle around this many switches
I find the touch screen great when stopped but a little useless when moving and a physical button is far better when on the move
Voice control
For the day nav is hit and mis so I normally type in the post code but this is down stationary so ok on the touch screen
I also find the sound quality to be on par if not a little better than the concert HU

Cheers. Paul

If there were an option to enable the buttons on the MFSW (say, just volume and next/previous track) that might be something I’d be quite interested in one day. I can live without them but maybe sometime in the future. I agree that using the touchscreen on the move isn’t ideal - and the physical buttons on the HU are on the small side - however I’m finding that Google voice control is working remarkably well for controlling google maps, just as well as in previous VW/Ford factory installations I’ve used.

Works well with Waze too.

Good evening all!
I hope you are all staying safe and keeping well. Alison is still going strong at just over 237,000 miles.

Today, I picked up her Refurbished Wheels from Spit and Polish in Tonbridge. Together with the Front and Rear Suspension Overhaul; earlier this year; Rear Wheel Brake Cylinders, Linings and Drums and a Full Service yesterday, ai believe Alison will be ready for at the very least another 237,000 miles!

I wondered whether you were still around. Glad to see that you and Alison are still together.

Hi, yes we're still about. We keep each other going. I've no intention of having any cosmetic work done to Alison. Just essential stuff and keeping her as clean as possible. Annual Interior Deep Clean is due soon!

Lord Boots is observed evaluating the quality of the Workmanship of the Wheel Refurb'. He said it was "Reasonable".

Today I made a start on this lovely early 1.4. It’s got a few areas that need my attention but it’s going to come up a cracker. Only 65k miles and 2 owners from new. Will get a machine polish, full service and will probably inherit the sport 9 spokes off it’s stable mate my project car. Will be advertised in the marketplace when the time is right.

... had to change the drop links on my mother-in-law's Astra, before it's MoT. I was surprised to find out they are plastic:

At least it reminded me why I prefer to work on VAG vehicles - they are much more nicely designed and built.

And here's an entirely gratuitous photo of my A2, after a quick wash, looking better at 155k than the Astra does at 27k!

Whatever you do, don't be tempted to let the man from Halfords do it. I did once. Took two of them twenty minutes and they were a bit quick about getting the bonnet back on. When I got to work, I took the bonnet off to check, they had fitted the bubls , but couldn't work out how to get the headlight access covers back on. Both of them had fallen off, one was wedged and the other lose on the undertray.
If I get to the stage of asking the man from Halfords to do anything, I'm giving up driving.

I must do that on my Crystal Blue one too - although no control arms were changed, just springs, shocks and a wheel bearing. But the steering wheel has been a few degrees out from centre for a while, since before that work.

I think its worth it for tyre wear alone Ian. I had a look at the findings on screen and the front of wheels were pointing outwards to a degree which cant be healthy. I had similar work done too.

Just recently worked on a Golf that uses plastic drop links, one of which had snapped!!
If you are having wheel alignment done make sure the steering wheel is dead center before they start. Off set steering wheel confuses the self cancelling indicators and can also have an effect of the slip ring in the column for the ESP and it just looks pants.
