Today I.....

Today (well late on yesterday actually) I....suffered a bit of range anxiety. I was hoping to get back home with what was left in the tank, but the Range estimate on the DIS seems to go down rather quickly once you get to a 1/4 of a tank left. Not knowing how accurate the predicted 30 miles was, I was getting a bit nervous on the last few hills near home. Fortunately I got to a 24 hour petrol (& diesel) station before I ran out and it took just over 37 litres, which suggests there were a few litres left in the tank.

Have to say I'm happy to have got to Edinburgh and back (578 miles) on a tank of diesel, averaging 70.5mpg up the M1/A1 (although the DIS thought I'd done 72.5mpg!) On the way up the traffic was heavy and I was keeping up with the flow, on the way back I was going at the speed limit, before dropping to 65 for the last 1/2 hour. I still find it amazing for a 20+ year old design with over 150k miles on the clock.

I was discussing the issue of my A2 being so low with Mrs A2Steve and how i'm concerned about using the car down the country lanes on my commute in the winter. There's normally lots of flooding and debris that could play havoc with a votex kit that's about 7cm off he ground.

Ideal solution on bad days, she can take my car and i'll take the family wagon, her response made me laugh

"i'm not driving that thing that you've created!!!" Priceless :)

It has at least put the idea in her head that a second A2 for winter may be needed ?

That’s not very nice of Sam
Do I take it she has more faith in Audi that she does in your good self

She very much likes A2's but hates driving the cars I build. Too noisy, to firm suspension, too much worry about kerbing the wheels. She has a point :)

Tonight I finally had the result I wanted from my twin boot lights. The original bulbs were just not good enough. I swapped out the standard bulbs and replaced them with leds. Now the light was very good but the smell of toasting plastic trim was not so good. The solution was to replace the complete light units with ones that contain the circuit board type leds built on. Better light and no heat.

Thanks to @2work for the heads up on the lights.

Proggy Towers is currently hosting @timmus, resulting in there being 6 A2's within my little close at one point yesterday. That's Tom's with the boot up, @Hedge's one on the drive, and Tom @2work's Azure one behind my Cobalt one at the side of the road. Pity about the camera stitching the panoramic together across the back of my Storm but still worth the shot. And every one of them is a TDI75. I think the neighbours are getting used to the throb of 3 cylinders now :D

While I'm at it, following its holiday round Cornwall, my Crystal one is now wearing my set of five-spoke SE's, I think they suit it much better than the Cobalt one as I had originally intended.

At least the weather looked like it was dry for the "surgery". Just thinking how good a time lapse video would look with Tom running about. Sorry Tom I know you work non stop. Perhaps the meeting could have been called Audis In Proggy Towers - almost apt really.

There was a lot of scurrying about early afternoon today at the sky darkened and the rumbles of thunder sounded, I can assure you :D Everything was safely put away before the heavens opened and Tom had most of the afternoon 'off'.

I have removed the rear bumper to tidy up a slightly damaged corner that was there when I got the car, and get if the bumper back back on the clips on that side as it always pinged back off ...... no damage to the clip plates or bar behind the bumper so good news .

Having read about water in the boot from the vents, I thought it would be sensible whilst I could get at them to take the vents off and clean them and to refit with mastic .
From my attempts it is nearly impossible to remove the vents without completely ripping the seals and breaking the vents themselves .... epic fail .
New vents have arrived from Crewe Audi ..... what would be the recommendation just refit the new ones or refit them with mastic added to and around the seal also ... Tx

Today I got my car back into my possession!

A quick tour underneath shows one of the exhaust hangers has snapped off of the exhaust at the side of the back-box.

Heat shielding over the exhaust has been knocked free a bit and was rattling.

Side Votex strip has been smashed in a bit.

All repairable and I’m just glad to have my boy back!

I and others simply added sealant around the vent without removing. See photo here https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/latest-mod-rear-parking-sensors.35812/post-312971

Used Dow Corning 781, around £6 from screwfix (last time I looked) Comes in choice of colours.

Yes no need to destroy the existing ones, unless visibly damaged already. The application of a nice thick bead of suitable mastic or body sealer is enough. Just give the area a thorough cleaning first to ensure a good bond. Yes definately apply sealant to the new vents. While the bumper is off check the mountings on the reinforcement beam as they have been known to wear and cause a rattle.
