So I have put the car back together :)
Checked timing sync and replaced the vacum pump seal (as it was leaking badly).

Rear wheel bearings swapped on my tdi 75 today. At mo my car is the gift that keeps on giving. In the process of swapping out bearings i found a rear brake cylinder has seized on passenger side and the back of it has worn away (aluminium type) causing the cylinder to not align with the shoes properly. Oh the joys of older car motoring lol.
 
replaced a crunchy top mount, made some blanks for the EGR pipe, oil change, replaced the G294 sensor although it transpired to be a wiring fault on the plug. But at least it put an end to the mystery FSI G294 saga.

Final job on the list is to do the injectors however I need to plan that one as the car will be off of the road whilst I send the injectors to mr injector

Dropped down to Leamington Spa to meet Parmjit @slumdog. It was brilliant to finally meet you Sir. Thank you so so much for the red leatherette rear door cards.

Today (and yesterday) I…

Checked my tyre pressures to find that they were exactly the same as they were two weeks ago. Reeeeesult! Having had intermittent pressure issues for 2 years or more, and having had Kwikfit/ATS have several goes at cleaning up the rims, I swapped alloys to some Mk1 TTs…nice to look at, and I don’t have to pump the tyres up every few days.

Also swapped my wiper arm for one of @depronman’s refurbished ones. Works like a dream, and no more wiper blade skips and noise.

Adjusted the height and close on the driver’s door. Now much more in line, sits flush with the rear door, and wind noise at 60/70mph is markedly reduced.

Installed some TT pedal covers. Excuse the mud in the photo, had to take the dog for a walk shortly after fitting.

And finally, one of my locking wheel bolts had been nastily chewed up on removal or refitting a few weeks ago (possibly by a garage). All bolt heads had an interesting straight spline(?) arrangement that I couldn’t find a direct replacement for. So, I’ve replaced all the bolts (so I only need one adapter) with some from a TT which have a more conventional spline/star shaped arrangement.

Phew!

Just loosened off the two spline bolts on the hinges between the door and the body of the car. The ones I used are the easiest to get at, and don’t actually have much adjustment room in them. They face towards the rear of the car, are dark grey/black and take a size 10 spline.

A willing volunteer (or, rather, a bored other half) holding the door up with an arm through the open window allowed me to get a bit more height on the door before tightening the bolts again. For more adjustment, I believe you’d have to take the door off completely and adjust where the hinges meet the door itself. This involves removing door check strap and disconnecting wiring.

For the door close, the catch on the door frame is very adjustable after loosening two more splines. It also has small indents so you can measure the adjustment easily. I moved mine inwards and up slightly.
 
Today I visited the excellent Haynes motor museum in Sparkford, Somerset with my family.

I then cruised the 111 miles to my parents’ house near Maidenhead at around 63-65mph and used just under 7L of fuel, resulting in a fuel consumption figure of 73.7mpg, which is nothing short of amazing considering the temperatures outside today were touching 5 degrees as I pulled up!

Yes it’s tricky keeping tabs on a toddler and two little boys with short attention spans and that means I don’t get to look at everything i want to by any means - although the youngest is showing signs of interest in how engines work and he keeps asking if we can buy an old car to rebuild, so who knows!

I must say these days I also appreciate cars from the pre-war period much more than I did in my yoof - things like the hand painted coach line on their Austin 7 saloon please me!
