Today I.....

I have a newish Audi cable, just a couple of years old. Shouldn’t have fatigued so quickly. Could be a crud problem as I wasn’t familiar with aluminium oxide then.
Car is starting fine with its replacement battery so I will check it all out when I change the engine.
Hi Little Dog,
It was the really short link lead on the starter it’s self not the engine/ chassis earth, it’s hidden under the plastic shroud on the starter motor below the cable connection’s.
Hope that helps
Keith.

@kp 115 thanks for the tip. I’ve had that cable fail on a Golf. Cranked very slowly.
I’ll check it out on the A2. The replacement cable is part of the brush assembly I believe?

Dropped the car off at the local garage. I booked in for today, but the Easter weekend is a busy time. I said there was no rush. They closed Friday, and all next week could be a long wait.

Finished the install of the long awaited Mr Blacks MZN gearbox and new clutch.

The car was sold to me in 2019 stating it had a new clutch recently, yeah that's a complete and utter fabrication!
Gear change has always been a touch notchy but not terrible but always crunched if selecting third and sometimes second swiftly! Lately noticed clutch pedal getting a touch heavy too but my wife hadn't complained in fairness.
Upon removal of the old box the oil wasn't too bad but tiny specs of brass were present. I did found however the selector fork pivot ball had worn thru and punctured a hole in the fork and spring in 2 pieces which was very surprising as never heard anyone mention this before.
Car drives lovely now I am over the moon and initial thoughts I think it's more suited than Mr Silvers JDD

Also replaced all 4 cv boots with universal SKF jobbies, seem really good but as always time will tell!

Also changed gearbox top mounting as this was knocking although the old one did not look terrible it's made a big difference!

@Menno give us a choice of the MZN (or MAL, MNY, MZK)

I have the MAL fitted to the TDI.

:)

Today I had a sort out of all the bits I picked up from Newton Aycliffe yesterday. I got home last night and realised I had an engine in the back of the car that I had to get out by myself 🤔 It was more like a semi controlled drop onto some blocks on the ground.. 😂

In theory I was collecting an engine and gearbox, but came home with all this in the back of the car! The lad just wanted shot of everything, so I had the lot for £200. Not visible is a brand new Borg & Beck clutch as well, and a good dipstick and tube. I want the gearbox for the blue car, and this engine has a good tandem pump on it, so I don't have to strip the one out of the blue car to try in the grey one.

I don't really need the engine, but thought it would be handy to have one so I can have a look at the injector loom and injectors etc, see how all that stuff goes in and out.

I had to get everything 1/2 a mile down a muddy track to where my workshop is, that was fun with the engine on a shonky sack barrow!

Nice to have canine company. 🙂

I think it still remains to be seen if it was all a bargain but fingers crossed! 🤞

And I've definitely not been eyeing up other cars in the classifieds, oh no

Am going to do something I thought I never would!!!!

Today is the day Tonka goes to his new home. I’m selling the A2 love of my life 😳

Having passed his MOT on Thursday, the new owner is collecting today, so I changed him from the plate it’s worn since I’ve owned him
IMG_7025.jpeg

back to (quite literally!) his original plate that I found quite by chance in the garage!
IMG_7029.jpeg

On the one hand, I’m very sad because I love this car. It’s a completely unique A2 which a previous long term owner built to a highly individual and (IMHO) very special spec.

During my ownership I’ve built on it by adding to its specification with a lot of @timmus magic dust sprinkled and lots of long term preventative maintenance via @chumsofmanutd WOM.

On the other hand, with the addition of this thing to the household
IMG_7031.jpeg

It’s been very much relegated to the third car after the Maserati and 1.2. I know the new owner (who has indicated they wish to remain anonymous, which I will of course respect) is the right owner and will be able to maintain and use the car as he deserves to be.

In another turn up, tomorrow I’m picking back up my very first A2.
IMG_2209.jpeg

The 1.2 is still up at WOM doing its best to test Rob & Marcus Job like patience again!!

The grey car has only done a couple of thousand miles since I sold it to my best mate for his lad. It would appear you don’t need a car if you live in Oxford and are in your early 20’s!!!

So I’ve agreed to take it back and run it for a few weeks until the 1.2 is sorted. There are a couple of little jobs and I’ll then be moving it on as well.

Goodness me Erling, the Countess must have bitten you hard! Lovely looking motor, but you're a braver man than me :) I'm glad you're staying firmly in the A2OC fold though with the 1.2 and the temporary runaround.
Thanks Ian. Yep, the 1.2 will very much remain the work horse mileage wise for me.

Not sure the Countess will be a for ever car but what it has done is shown me that their are LOTS of car itch’s which will need scratching beyond A2’s.

Still can’t imagine life without one around though and dads 1.2 can keep mine company once the grey one moves on. 😊
