Too good to be true... tdi90

Trying to convince my parents to ditch their 2002 Honda and get an A2 and a Tdi90 pops up less than 1 mile away for a silly low price.

Am I being an optimistic mug? What does a blown turbo look like?...

A blown turbo could be a real mess. If its the compressor/ inlet side thats gone then bits of blade could have gone into the cylinders.
If its the turbine/exhaust side then any broken vanes will have gone down the exhaust pipe!
The only way to find out is to remove the turbo and have a look. If the price is right and the rest of the car is ok it could be worth a punt.
If it doesnt run then its not possible to check the DM flywheel, which is the other Tdi90 weakness.

Apparently it ‘runs well’. That’s just fear talking!

Ah ok. If a turbo goes it's usually the spindle bearing that wears badly. Then excessive oil will leak and the exhaust will smoke like hell! It will soon clear the oil out of the sump!

Worth going to have a look at it. If its a professional diagnosis that the turbo has blown then that's one thing, but it could just be their summary after 'Googling it' and you may get lucky, especially if its running fine.

The seller didn’t actually mention the turbo. They said all was fine - I’m just thinking worst case scenario!

Thanks for the reassurance. Mum is checking insurance quotes.

Does anyone actually do those ‘car checks’ to see if a car is stolen or a write off? Does that actually happen for a cheap car?

Go on the dvla site and you can check the mot history, which will give an idea of how its been looked after.
HPI will carry out a full check on ownership.....for a fee!

I see on mot history in May 2018 there was an advisory about a lower wishbone being corroded. May be worth having a good look underneath at both sides.

Thanks buddy.

MOT history only suggests a couple of fails for drop links and track rod ends over the last few years.

About 2014 there were some brake issues and tyre baldness but that must have been fixed.

Doesn’t look bad at all... compared to mine

Alex.

Any value of vehicle will have an entry following a crash (of appropriate classification). As Rob said, MoT history is very helpful. Happy to assist or view if you wish (have portable VCDS), rest assured, my driveway is already full. 😜

I saw that. Pretty sure it’ll be pressed steel so was on my ‘list’.

Thanks David. I’m starting to think inviting you along to look at an A2 would be a form of ‘enabling’... your driveway was full when I last visited and you’ve added two more cars since then!

I'm way too smart(read scared) to try adding another vehicle to the fleet. I'm not even going to view the pine green low mileage one going through BCA Edinburgh today.

It was £650... and he sold it before I got there!

I text him straight away AND went over to his house on the off chance an hour later!
