Webasto

Coldest day of the winter so far. Minus two degrees. Guess which bit decided to stop working?

Has anyone had their auxilary heater fail - webasto type?

I'm guessing it is the auxilary heater, as there was none of the usual distant roar that I get on cold mornings. Temperature gauge didn't shift until I built up speed to about 50mph. Temperature rose to the normal rock steady 90 degrees and stayed there until I got stuck in heavy traffic, when it went down to 80 degrees. Reducing the temperature on the climate control from 22 to 19 allowed it to go up again.

Is there an easy fix? Econ is not lit on the climate control.

Advice please.

Hi John
I only recall one member having problems with the heater and that related to it smoking I think - do a search on Webasto and check if there are others.
As yours has just stopped working completely, it could be a temp sensor which has failed. Unfortunately a diagnostic scan is the only way to check.
If the unit turns out to be faulty, a Webasto dealer may be able to fix it rather than going to Audi - see link for dealer locator

Hi Spike,

I did a quick seach using webasto and auxilary heater before I put up the post (I should have mentioned that) and saw the smoking posting that you refer to. The next few days are forecast to be cold, so I will see what happens. The worst that can happen is that my MPG takes a hit. I still have heat inside the car. Roll on summer...

Thank you for the advice and link.

Webasto update

My Webasto is now working again. Turns out the problem may have been something to do with the battery. Here is what happened.

About a month ago, I returned from holiday to find that my car had a totally flat battery. The car was started using jump leads and everything was fine until last week, when I came down with man flu and the car sat unused for four days. When I went to use the car, it would unlock with the key fob but not turn over. A battery charger was attached with the battery in-situ. After forty minutes the charger was disconnected and the car started and taken out for a spin. It was a cold night and next thing I could hear was the fan of the Webasto whirring into life and then there was heat! It has not done this in the past year and one month.

I replaced the (seven? EDIT: Six and a half years old) battery yesterday and again this morning the Webasto fired into life. Happy days!

I did notice one odd thing this morning, but it took me a while to work out what it was. When the car was started the temperature display was +2. when I got near the end of my journey the temperature had risen to +4.5 with a snow flake. I am quite sure that there was no snow flake when the temperature was +2. Odd???

I will keep an eye on things to see if anything else odd occurs. I feel a purchase from Gendan Limited may be likely.
