What is the maximum RPM of the 1.4 Tdi?

I seem to remember it is supposed to go just to the red which is 4500 rpm or maybe it went to 4450.
Could anyone confirm what the 1.4 tdi is meant to rev limit at?
Thanks,
Robbie

I'm having a bit of a remap nightmare.
I left the car with the garage and after 2 failed attempts at correcting a problem which involved the engine having no rev limiter at all (it just revved right up to 5000 rpm), they eventually managed to get it to limit at < 5000 rpm. After a week or so of not much power increase, it was producing too much black smoke and only getting 34 mpg so I decided to have the ECU restored to the original state. I thought it was restored, but tonight thought i would check the rev limiter. It goes well into the red at 4800 rpm, which is the second last red mark on the scale.

I thought during the remapping process only the values that controlled fueling, turbo etc should be changed. The rev limiter is surely something that should not be changed.
I researched the company I chose and couldn't find anything bad, only good reports. Also had a polo 1.4 tdi done at the same time which was very successful. Surely even if they messed up my original file all they would have had to do is flash the ECU with a generic/standard file for my particular ECU and all values would be restored.

I'm unsure of the hard limit - but there is one, which I regularly hit in first, if I'm getting a quick getaway;)

The rev limiter can be altered by remap software, but it is unwise to do so, as it's the safeguard for your big end!

Who did you entrust the remap to (PM if needed)? It sounds like they may have triggered something unintentionally.

I put the car in for a remap. At first it seemed excellent until i noticed lots of black smoke and the strange noise I posted about here:
http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9355
Also after the remap the car had no rev limit, it just revved off the scale - 5000 rpm.
I took it back and left it with them. When i returned the guy told me it had taken a few attempts to get the rev limiter back.
It now revved to approx. 4800 rpm. The performance was not much better than standard now and there was still more black smoke than usual so i asked them to put it back to 'standard'.
I thought they had fully restored it but later noticed that it still revved to 4800 which i was sure was not standard.
Contacted them and was told they had restored the original file and could do nothing to correct the problem.
So it was revving to 4500 rpm before they mapped it. Then after the remap there was no rev limit and after multiple attempts finally got it to rev to 4800 which is not the correct rev limit. Then they restore the original file and the rev limit is still wonky.
That do you think, any advice?
Thanks again,
Robbie

I remember reading that thread, but concentrated on the possibility of bearing faults in the turbo.

It sounds to me like the remapper doesn't fully understand the channels they are manipulating in the ECU - I would ask them to re-instate the factory condition of your ECU and if they can't do this, to replace it with a new part.

If they are unwilling to do this, seek the advice of something like the local trading standards unit.

Once your car is back to how it should be, go to the PROPER experts - Stealth Racing and get the job done correctly, first time, with no smoke and no other bad side effects.

Cheers,

Mike
