Whine/ Vibration?

Hi everyone,

Over the past few weeks my A2 has developed a whine from the front end. I can`t pin it down to either side of the car. It is at its most noticable between 40 and 60 mph but can be detected down to 30. I have run a few tests including dipping the clutch and turning the engine off completely, on both occasions the noise remains. It does not seem to get any worse around the bends, its still just as annoying on the straights.

My innitial thoughts are probably wheel bearing. Its going in monday week. Anyone had similar problems?

Cheers P.

Oh and should this fault show up on the DIS because it hasn`t done.

I hope its only the bearing. Driveshaft/ gearbox problems usually equate to a large amount of reddies to fix.

Why does my car always make a habbit of breaking when i`m in the middle of housing renovations, never when i`m flush with cash?

Cheers P

Spike,

The other thread you directed me to does not seem to have a conclusion before it was locked.

Is runboy still a member, and if he is, what was the actual problem with his car. I will post my actual problem when its been fixed next week.

Cheers P.

Hi P

I don't think runboy has an A2 now but he occasionally drops in to see whats happening in the Club. As you say, it's a lost opportunity when a thread dries up without any info on the fix for a problem.
Keep us posted on how the dealer fixes your car. If they struggle to resolve it, perhaps we could get in touch with runboy and ask how his car was repaired.

Cheers Spike

Well, been into the garage today and the problem is definately the near side front wheel bearing.

It has not been fixed yet however because the spares centre sent a bearing for an A2 with a 4 stud wheel?? Mine has 5 stud on the SE standard rims so its booked in again for a week next Monday. At least i now know what the problem is, and that it isn`t going to kill me.

Just have to put up with the horrendous noise for another couple of weeks.

Wheel Bearing

Hi Mate,
Mine Has The Same Problem.i Thought It Was A Bearing Did All Tests[going Round Corners Left To Right No Change In Noise.switching Off Engine While Coasting, putting Car In Neutral, but The Noise Still Remains The Same].
Did They Give You A Price On The Job And Also How Can They Tell Which Side Is The Problem.
Cheers Mark

Hi Mark

Unfortunately i didn`t ask price wise, I use an independant who i have known for years. I know its the near side because he stripped it down before he realised the suppliers had sent the wrong part.

However, i could pretty much guarantee it was near side before it went in, the best test is to go to a roundabout maintaing a steady speed, the noise should get worse the more you turn to the right as this is shifting the weight of the car onto the near side, obviously visa versa for the drivers side ( but not round a roundabout LOL).

Hope this helps cheers P.

PS will post price when job done, can`t see it being much more than £100 though

My front near side bearing needs replaceing, Huntingdon Audi are going to charge me just over £314.

I guess we`ll find out just how much the stealers are ripping us off in 2 weeks then.

If my car was less than 3 years old it would be going to the dealers, as its not and i intend to keep it for a while, i`ll take it to an independant i know and trust.

Cheers P

Fixed

Right, got it fixed.

Cost me £140, the wheel bearing is only avaliable as a genuine part, this made up £85 of the bill. My mechanic also had to have a special tool made to remove the old bearing and fit the new one, this cost £20 of the bill.

The rest was his labour. Bit better than £314 i think.

Moral of the story, use a good independant.

Cheers P.

Audi dealer quote

Just been quoted 237.53 GBP tio replace one o/s front wheel bearing.

That's with Audi 30% discount but still 62.30GBP/hr labour and 2 hrs of that!

How long should it take?

You may well find that Audi would like you to think that their wheel bearings can only be purchased directly from them as they are genuine, however the true is, that they were more than likely produced by one of the main bearing manufacturers like "Timpken", Audi then charge you one hell of a mark up for supplying an original Audi cardboard box. Try a local wheel bearing supplier and I would be surprised if they cannot source a direct replacement and more than likely the OEM, and at a much reduced price.

Job done!

Went to local audi specialist after getting the correct part from Germany- cost 75 euros incl rapid delivery.

Labour was £65 all incl. So that;s a total of around £115.

She sounds sweet now!

Crikey £300+! I think we've got the same problem. NSF is my guess but from the drivers seat its difficult to really tell. I'll let you all know what the local stealers want when its been in for a quote. I've got the A6 in for a front pipe first (I know nobody goes to the dealers for exhausts but nobody else makes it, I know I've looked). They've just moved to a new showroom so they'll obviously want a contribution towards it, although I have been invited to the opening and an ogle at an R8. I wonder whether I can eat/drink £300 worth?
