X type Diesel

I had a real(bring the car back before 10[24]) test drive in an X Type diesel a few days ago courtesy fo the Jaguar road show.

Good performance and handling although economy on the trip computer was not too promising (32mpg over the 45 minutes) although I did push it a little this is worse than my 1.8T Passat would have done driven that way. Quiet, diesel just distinguishable, and comfortable. They claim to have re-engineered the top end of the engine although power output and torque are unchanged from the Ford.

Unfortunately the demo car was FULLY loaded (around 8k of extras) so a little beyond my reach, a less loaded one should be. Has made me think again about what the Passat is to be replaced with. Will be a diesel and runners were Passat 1.9D 130 :)and Mondeo 2.0TDCI130[21] on size/performance/CO2 emissions. Have got until November to decide.

Also tried an S Class 2.5 - sluggish and the seat backs moved - when I returned it they didn't believe me, until they looked!

Most Jaguar seatbacks move as well... you don't really notice this until someone tells you. At the Geneva motorshow I wiggled all the Jag seats and all their seatbacks moved alarmingly by about 10/15mm... quality inside (even the new XJ) was to my eyes just a smidgen above a Ford's, so very poor IMHO (vs other £50000 cars)... a Golf is better inside.

As to X-type: It is the furthest looking thing from proper Jaguar DNA you can get IMHO. It sits too high on its wheels and does not look cat-about-to-catch-its-prey at all. And those squashed chihuahua headlights! No wonder the factory is sitting idle with sales down up to 40% in some markets. I'm sorry, it is not just the lack of diesels that are causing that sales draught, it is that the X does not look like a proper Jag and is based too clearly on a Mondeo that is putting people off...

I've read in the motoring press that there are very good deals on new X-Type Jags (dealers chucking money off in addition to the finance offers from Jag).

This of course means 2nd hand values are falling-the dealers are pricing the cars to look good but offering huge money off.

Just shows that the basic buying public out there are not as stupid as Ford thought. Tarting up a front wheel drive Mondeo maketh a Jaguar not...

Johann - remember its not just Ford doing it.

Without common platforms, and Fords intevention, Jaguar would not be where it is today.
All cars share some common parts with other cars. In todays market, why spend £millions to develop a slightly different part, when you can take it from the family parts bin - Jaguar are taking full advantage, and I dont blame them. You seem to know a lot about the automotive industry, and therefore should know that this market is the most severe manufacturing markets globally.
It will be a very sad if Jaguar doesn't survive the current market competition. Personally I believe Jaguar quality (i.e. build quality, and not materials quality) has not gotten any worse under Ford ownership (it was never that high in the first place).
If Jag want to start from a Mondeo base, which isn't bad, and then 'tart' it up then I say best of luck to them. I for one think the X-type looks fantastic.

Look at the Aston-some switchgear from the Mondeo. How do they get away with it-do the people buying not realise/love the car they don't care?.

I suppose you could say to look at the whole package

I know... but look how true an A3 looks like an Audi. And a Golf is a Golf and same for a Leon. The X does not look like a proper Jaguar to me that is all. Being based on a Mondeo is not the biggest cardinal sin no. But throwing most of your design DNA away is...

The previous shape Hyundai Sonata looked more like a proper Jag to me: low, wide and like a cat on the prowl:

But as always beauty is in the eye of the beholder and many people will tell you how ugly an A2 is!!! And yet we love them! Each to his own...

I agree with you on the looks, the X Type has the wrong proportions to be a real Jaguar. Looking at it independently Ford can do nothing but improve Jaguar's quality - look back 15 years to see what their quality was like (remember at one stage they were part of Leyland)- but when you look at the price of a TDCI Mondeo the Jag is not much more expensive. It is a nice car to drive and will no doubt sell in large (for Jaguar) numbers.
