Yes I've acknowledged his early diagnosis. I didn't act on all the advice at the time though because my filters had 30k on them with a 40k service interval.
Perhaps supermarket fuel is dirty of maybe aftermarket filters are not as good as Audi. I don't buy rubbish though.

There is a filter in each petrol pump, on each grade of fuel, so dirt being drawn from the tank is unlikely. The meter that measures the fuel you buy, is made to very tight tolerances, (to meet the legal accuracy), and is at least as sensitive to dirt as your car.

You read a lot of negativity about supermarket fuel. I have no choice and have been using it for 25 years and been perfectly happy with it. This the first time I've even thought to be suspicious. Thanks for the clarification.
 
I routinely replace my fuel filter every year, regardless where I buy the fuel from. I do think some of the additives added into the fuel make the filters dirty very quickly.
